Skybound Entertainment CEO not worried about The Walking Dead’s ratings

If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead and have been concerned about the show’s steady decline in the ratings, Skybound Entertainment CEO David Alpert says you shouldn’t be worried.

There’s no hiding the fact that The Walking Dead hasn’t been that great for quite some time. At least, from this writer’s point of view, which may not be the most popular opinion, considering AMC’s flagship series still dominates the Sunday night ratings and was the second most pirated show of 2017.

Season 8’s All Out War story-arc was supposed to right the ship, after The Walking Dead’s disastrous seventh season, and yet, the show hit an all-time low in viewer ratings by the time episode 807 rolled around, which just so happened to be the penultimate episode of season 8A.

While that should be of some concern for both fans of the show and its cast and crew, Skybound Entertainment (Parent company for The Walking Dead) CEO David Alpert told Variety there really isn’t anything to worry about.

"I don’t think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general. I think we’re just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time."

Alpert has a point here, with streaming services like Amazon Prime releasing episodes after they’ve aired on AMC, and with AMC.com doing the same — as well as other streaming services and torrent sites — fans of shows like The Walking Dead don’t have to tune into AMC at 8 PM on Sunday nights just to stay up with the story.

Add the various On Demand packages for many cable providers, and you’ve got a boatload of viewers watching the show the next day, instead of live. The Walking Dead season 8 returns this February 25, on AMC.
