Fans have one more reason to be excited about the second season of Big Little Lies: Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep will be joining the cast.

The news was announced by HBO via their Twitter account on Wednesday and has already caused a social media whirlwind. It’s unsurprising to see the excitement as the announcement comes on the heels of her twenty-first Oscar nomination, a promising start for the second season of a terrific series.

Streep will continue her career of playing complex female characters on Big Little Lies by playing Perry’s mother. For those who have forgotten, Perry (played by Alexander Skarsgard) was the abusive husband of Celeste (the extraordinary Nicole Kidman) who bit the dust at the end of the first season.

Her character, Mary Louise Wright, will undoubtedly come into town to deal with the death of her son and the long-term effects of his abuse in relation to her grandchildren. Since HBO has also confirmed the return of Skarsgard, Streep might also get the opportunity to explore the relationship between mother and son through the years.

Not much of Perry’s backstory has been revealed and with the creative minds behind the series promising a look into Bonnie’s (Zoe Kravitz) family life, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more characters get the same.

The critically acclaimed series isn’t expected to return until 2019 but production should start soon. While Jean-Marc Vallee won’t be returning to direct, David E. Kelley has finished the seven episodes he was tasked with writing, and Lianne Moriarty (the author of the novel) helped craft the story for the upcoming season.
