Oh, blessed be! Cherry Jones to play Offred’s mom in The Handmaid’s Tale

After dominating awards season, The Handmaid’s Tale is deep in preparation for its next season–most notably in casting. Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones will be taking on the role of Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) mother in the second season.

Offred/June’s mother has been mentioned throughout the first season during flashbacks. However, season 2 will bring her to life in the form of Cherry Jones in episode 3. When we meet Offred’s mother, Holly, we will quickly learn she is deeply rooted in support of feminism, and a bit rough around the edges. However, she loves her daughter deeply–just how much, we will learn soon enough.

Showrunner Bruce Miller revealed that plans to bring Holly into the series had been a part of the place since the first season.

"June’s memories of her mother and her activism are very vibrant in the book, so we’ve been talking about her from day one of season one."

While we do not know details involving the series, Margaret Atwood’s novel sheds light on the complex character Holly is. Offred’s mention of her mother (in the novel) highlights her discomfort with Holly’s extreme views on feminism.

However, this mentality changes as Gilead comes to fruition. Where is Holly in present-day? In the novel, Offred is unaware but sees her appear in a training video shown to the Handmaids.
