This week’s episode was a turbulent, emotional adventure

9-1-1, What’s your emergency? A plane in the middle of an emergency landing, that’s what! This week dove literally into an episode filled with emotions, pain, and Abby (Connie Britton) losing her mother. The epicenter of the episode revolved around a malfunctioning plane that was forced to make an emergency landing. Our merry band of first responders showed up ready to save lives–and face the harsh reality of their jobs, death.

We also got a glimpse into Bobby’s (Peter Krause) past, who appears to have lost his family in a fire. Although the crew is unaware of the details, it is clear that a dark past haunts him. This becomes apparent when, following the plane crash rescue, Bobby works himself into a drunken mess after rescuing a woman in the crash.

While the crew grappled with the plane crash rescue, Athena (Angela Bassett) fought her own battles. After her daughter’s attempted suicide, Athena was dead-set on getting revenge on the girl who bullied her daughter.

She confronted the girl and managed to get her arrested for possession of illegal substances. Unfortunately, in the quest to seek revenge, this situation got her put on restricted duty when the girl’s parents filed a complaint.

In the midst of the plane crash, a man called 9-1-1 and left an extremely emotional message for his pregnant wife. On the receiving end, listening was Abby, who took it upon herself to find out if this man survived the crash. With the help of Buck (Oliver Stark), she learns he did not make it and has his wife come in to listen to the recording.

This moment was particularly heartbreaking and beautiful and played out in complete silence as she listened to the message.

In the final moments of the episode, a grief-stricken exhausted Abby made her way home to relieve her mom’s caretaker. Ignoring her offer to stay the night, Abby makes the caretaker leave, only to find exhaustion catches up with her. When she wakes up she finds that her mom has run away!

“The Worst Day Ever” was a brutal reminder that 9-1-1 and first responders truly have a difficult job. While the 9-1-1 responders are often helpless and can only provide a verbal comfort, the first responders have to be in the midst of the action–whether they can handle it or not.
