The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln talks about Carl’s death in the midseason premiere.

When The Walking Dead season 8 returns to AMC on February 25, Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) will say goodbye. In the midseason finale, Carl revealed to his father and Michonne that he had been bitten by a walker. In that vein, Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) talked about Carl’s emotional farewell in the midseason premiere.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln didn’t hold back on his reaction to losing one of the four remaining original cast members from season 1.

"I’m not going to lie to you, that was sad. The beautiful thing is it’s what we rarely do in our show — we actually give the opportunity for a goodbye. It was unusual in that regard. Usually, things happen and people are ripped from you in this world that we inhabit. Thankfully, there was some sense of catharsis on this one, because we got to leave it all out on the screen."

Lincoln praised Chandler Riggs’ farewell performance, saying he did a “remarkable job, as he always has done, but particularly in this episode.” His emotional response echoes what director/producer Greg Nicotero had to say about Carl’s goodbye, calling it a “very sad farewell,” and that he never thought Carl’s death would happen. “Neither did most of the rest of the cast, I would imagine.”

Website TV Line revealed exclusive photos of Carl writing a letter in the midseason premiere, which is most likely a goodbye to his family and friends.

We also see Rick and Michonne trying to stop the fires from burning Alexandria to the ground.

As you can see, The Walking Dead season 8 midseason premiere is going to be an emotional roller coaster, as Carl will die, Rick and Michonne will try to save what’s left of the Alexandria Safe Zone, and Negan will do Negan things, I’m sure.
