Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss will write and produce new Star Wars films
In a turn of unexpected events, Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, will write and produce an all-new series of Star Wars films.
I bet you didn’t see this coming. While we still may be over a year away from the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, its showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss already have a new gig lined up: making Star Wars films. That’s right, from the creative pair that brought you some of television’s most talked about moments, like the infamous Red Wedding, son shoots dad on the crapper, and brother and sister bone each other non-stop, will be coming to a galaxy far, far away in the very near future.
SAN DIEGO, CA – JULY 25: Writer/producers David Benioff (L) and D.B. Weiss attend HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ panel and Q
According to StarWars.com, David Benioff and Dan Weiss will write and produce a series of new Star Wars films separate from the Skywalker saga, as well as that of Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s all-new Star Wars trilogy project. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy heaped some high praise on the pair.

"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."
One can’t help but wonder if “boldly push Star Wars” means in an R-rated direction. For coming on eight seasons now, Benioff and Weiss have been bringing the political intrigue, violence, quality story-telling, as well as loads of nudity…like a whole lot of it, to HBO, making it TV’s most popular and talked about show since 2011. Benioff and Weiss released a joint statement.
"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

One thing the Star Wars cinematic universe is lacking is adult-themed movies. However, with Disney owning the rights to Lucasfilm, I just can’t see that ever happening. One thing Game of Thrones fans should take to heart, however, is Benioff and Weiss have no plans of taking on their new adventure until season 8 is all said and done.
