On the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead, the son of hero Rick Grimes, Carl, died. However, that wasn’t the only dead son that The Walking Dead announced since season 7 restarted.

Yes, Carl Grimes died — and that was a complete shock to fans of the comic books. Carl is hugely important in the comics, and many fans feel that he will be the primary leader once Rick finally dies down the line.

The good news for comic book fans is that Scott Gimple’s decision to kill Carl Grimes on the midseason premiere does not change anything that will happen in the comics. Robert Kirkman straight up said in the letter’s section of The Walking Dead #177 that the comics and TV series is not the same.

That answer was in reference to a question about Michonne. In some slight spoilers for anyone who is behind in the comic books, Rick and company just discovered a new society — one called The Commonwealth. While fans of The Walking Dead TV show are used to Rick coming into new societies and taking control, that is impossible here. There are around 50,000 people living in the Commonwealth.

One of those people is Elodie — Michonne’s daughter that she thought was dead all this time.

Now, one of the many differences between The Walking Dead comic books and TV show is that on the show, Michonne had a son named Andre. In the comics, she had two daughters — both that she thought was dead. When asked if Elodie — someone that fans of the comics have started to like — being alive means that Andre might be alive as well, Robert Kirkman gave a definitive answer.

Robert Kirkman said that Andre is dead, so much like Rick Grimes, who just lost his only son, Michonne’s only son is also dead, and there is no chance of a miracle reunion in the future.

With Carl dead and Michonne’s son now guaranteed to be dead, the two have a lot more in common — tragic cases of parents who outlived their children. Maybe Judith can help them rebuild together. Then again, this is The Walking Dead, and they don’t seem to enjoy giving fans happy moments.

The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights on AMC at 8 p.m. CST.
