American Horror Story: A horrific future?

The first hints of American Horror Story’s next theme have been dropped and have us wondering — is AHS going sci-fi?

As per the usual, the details of the next season are being held tightly under wraps, save for that it will be set in the future. What sort of future is anyone’s guess, though it certainly will be a horrific one.

In an interview with EW at the Television Critics Association semi-annual press tour, Ryan Murphy stated, “All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future — still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done.”

He also stated it will not be set in space.

So it seems, though nothing solid, that season 8 will be a dystopian nightmare. There is also the possibility of this dropped hint being a ruse, like the very successful marketing ploy for season 4: “Freak Show,” making fans guess which theme is the true one.

With strong competition from dark sci-fi shows like Black Mirror and Altered Carbon, I hope a solid storyline is in the works, so American Horror Story will live to see the long awaited crossover season 9.

For me, the seasons have been hit and miss, though the misses haven’t yet killed my curiosity of what comes next. There is always a risk of a flat season ending a show entirely though, which was a worry after season 6: “Roanoke,” which started strong, but ended silly, like a bad 80’s high school slasher.

To me the strongest seasons are the ones that are focused, instead of all over the place, like “Asylum,” which included everything and the kitchen sink.
