DC and Marvel Television score multiple Saturn Awards nominations
DC has carved out an impressive fan base on television, but Marvel is quickly catching up with their superhero shows.
This year’s Saturn Awards nominations saw both comic book giants snag nominations for many of their series. There’s also a big battle between streaming services and network television, with DC primarily working on a smaller budget compared to Marvel’s buzzy noir series.
It will be interesting to watch if the smaller Arrowverse shows can win big against Netflix.

The CW took home quite a few nominations this year for their Arrowverse. Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist and Odette Annable both received recognition for their acting. The other Arrowverse series were all nominated for Best Superhero Television Series. Hartley Sawyer was recognized for his work on The Flash for Best Guest-Starring Performance.
FOX’s DC Comics property also snagged a nomination despite the falling ratings. The CW’s other comic book property, Riverdale, nabbed nominations for KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, and Cole Sprouse as well as this season.
Marvel had a welcome presence in the 2018 Saturn Awards with Netflix getting recognition. Krysten Ritter was rightfully nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Defenders and Jon Bernthal for Best Actor. The Punisher, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and Runaways were recognized in the Best New Media Superhero Series.
Three of those series are understandable but Iron Fist was so unbelievably bad that it’s shocking to see it in the category. Jessica Jones or Luke Cage were far more deserving additions that should have been recognized. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was only nominated once — for Best Superhero Television Series — despite the fantastic season it’s been having.

Last year, Supergirl won big for The CW and lightning might strike twice. However, it would be nice to see Krysten Ritter take home an award in her category over Odette Annable after her season-saving performance. With the rate that Marvel Television has been improving, DC might be in for some real trouble at the Saturn Awards this year.
