Timeless recap: ‘Hollywoodland’
“Hollywoodland” was probably one of the most anticipated episodes of the Timeless season, maybe the series.
Timeless knows its audience has been pining for the Lucy/Wyatt romance to finally emerge so they promoted that big kiss all week. However, things aren’t going to be smooth-sailing for the two lovebirds after this hour.
Rittenhouse bad guy of the week is a big shot producer named Hearst. He was dropped off in Hollywood as a teenager by his father who has slowly risen through the ranks. Unlike the previous two sleepers who arrived at the beginning of their careers, Lucas was abandoned as a young boy.

It makes you question how many parents have groomed their children to join the cause. Nevertheless, “Hollywoodland” doesn’t dwell that much on the now-adult man’s desire to stick around in the 1940’s.
The time crew arrives at the Paramount Lot in 1941, where they meet a key ally in their fight. Notorious inventor and actress, Hedy Lamarr, is on the scene to showcase her intellectual prowess. She quickly sees through Rufus’ disguise as Langston Hughes but humors the group nonetheless.
Helping them sneak into a large party full of big shots in Hollywood, the team discovers Rittenhouse plans to sell Citizen Kane to William Randolph Hearst in exchange for a weekly column in his paper.
Lucy knows that Hearst was one of the masters behind “yellow journalism,” and allowing Rittenhouse to print “fake news” could misinform the public. However, the group takes a detour to Lamarr’s house before making any rash decisions. There are probably quite a few viewers who are more interested in seeing Rufus and Hedy tinker with inventions.
However, “Hollywoodland” is all about Wyatt and Lucy where the two finally admit their feelings to one another. In another series, their will-they-won’t-they romance would have stretched out for at least another two seasons. Knowing that this could be the final goodbye for the series, it’s nice to see the timetable moved up a bit.
In typical Timeless fashion, the team manages to stop Rittenhouse and get Flynn out of jail by the end of “Hollywoodland”. However, the present day only brings up more questions. The big one is how Jiya is now in perfect health despite the seizures and visions.
Connor will probably be investigating this for the rest of the season, finally giving his character something to do. However, the jaw-dropping ending shows that Jessica is still alive!
For those who forget, Jessica is Wyatt’s deceased wife he kept trying to save last year. Since the team did change history by killing a guard and helping Hedy become a billionaire this could be a ripple effect. “Hollywoodland,” doesn’t give viewers a definitive answer, but something smells fishy.
Could Rittenhouse have brought back Jessica simply to throw a wrench in Lucy and Wyatt’s relationship? It’s definitely a move which shakes up the team dynamic and not in a good way.

The shock of Jessica’s return and the ambitious storytelling for season two of Timeless is almost refreshing. Yes, it’s sad to know that Lucy is only going to suffer more in these upcoming weeks but the series isn’t afraid to hold back.
These ten episodes could have been made entirely to appease fans but they are pulling out all of the stops instead.
