‘The Three-Body Problem’ may invade Amazon as a new series
Amazon plans to develop the Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem into a series to compete with Game of Thrones.
Move over HBO; there’s a new network giant on the block. Vanity Fair reports that Amazon may purchase the rights to The Three-Body Problem, a popular science fiction book trilogy, for a whopping $1 billion. You read that right.
If the deal with Amazon goes through, The Three-Body Problem could be one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. And some think the series could be bigger than Game of Thrones.

The novel, which takes place in China, centers around aliens on the brink of extinction who plan to invade earth. Each book in the trilogy will serve as one season of the series.
Amazon is proving to be a force in must-watch television. They recently partnered with J. R. R. Tolkien’s estate to develop a Lord of the Rings TV series for $250 million.
It’s hard to imagine another series having the same success that Game of Thrones has enjoyed for the past nine years. I mean, it’s arguably the biggest and most popular show of all time.
Networks have tried to capture a sliver of the success for years. TV epics like The Bastard Executioner (FX) and Of Kings and Prophets (ABC) failed to strike the same chord with fans.
While The Three-Body Problem will probably be popular, especially with the buzz it’s already receiving; I can’t see it surpassing Game of Thrones.
The Lord of the Rings series may come close.
Fans of the middle earth drama have firmly cemented their place in geekdom, just like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones. You can’t go to any Comic-Con without seeing hobbits sipping soft drinks, discussing the meaning of life next to Chewbacca, Ron Wesley, and Jon Snow.

Only time will tell whether The Three-Body Problem fans will find a place in that world, too. But we know it will cost a boatload of money to get there.
