YouTube Red is expanding its roster of original shows with a TV spinoff of Edge of Seventeen.

The critically acclaimed movie was a surprise hit at the box office and earned lead actress Hailee Steinfeld a Golden Globe nomination. Unfortunately, Hollywood Reporter revealed the Edge of Seventeen spinoff will feature an entirely new ensemble of characters.

Kelly Fremon Craig, the original writer, is expected to take on an executive producer role for the drama. Atypical writer, Annabel Oakes has signed onto the project to script the pilot. YouTube has yet to announce a director for the project, but the hunt is underway to find the perfect candidate.

This will be the second high-profile adaptation for the burgeoning streaming network. It joins Cobra Kai, which debuted to large ratings and critical success. YouTube Red seems dedicated to acquiring more interesting projects that other networks seem to overlook.

However, don’t expect this version of Edge of Seventeen to just be a rip-off of the original. YouTube Red reassures fans that this rendition will “subvert standard teen show tropes” and tell the story of a young girl adapting to high school.

The teen drama genre is currently undergoing a golden renaissance with many networks putting out fantastic shows. Riverdale, the Archie Comics adaptation, is flying high after the success of its first season, and 13 Reasons Why is about to debut its highly anticipated sequel.

Jade Miranda, the Executive Vice President of STXTV (STX was the production company of the movie), had only positive things to say about the adaptation.

"“So when critics and audiences fell in love with the The Edge of Seventeen film in 2016, we knew there was more story to tell and new ideas to explore, and from there the possibility of creating a TV version came to light. We worked closely with Kelly Fremon Craig to find a special writer like Annabel who could do just that. The YouTube audience is exactly who the original film was made for, which is why they’re the perfect fit to bring this incredibly funny and smart franchise to life.”"

Fans can expect an Edge of Seventeen spinoff to debut sometime in 2019. As YouTube Red continues expanding its roster, subscribers should see more high-profile content join the streaming service.
