Game of Thrones: Maisie Williams teases Arya Stark’s fate

Maisie Williams posts an enigmatic goodbye to Game of Thrones and Arya Stark on her Instagram.

Clues about season eight of Game of Thrones are few and far between, what with the season not premiering until 2019 and no ComicCon presence this year. Maisie Williams, however, isn’t shy with the teasers as she posts a mysterious photo of a pair of bloody tennis shoes along with the hashtag #lastwomanstanding. The caption in full reads “Goodbye belfast. goodbye arya. goodbye game of thrones. what a joy i’ve had. here’s to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely #immasleepforthenextfouryears #justkiddingidontsleep.”

More from Game of Thrones

Not surprisingly, much has been made of the most insignificant of details when it comes to Game of Thrones, and much has already been made of Williams’s post. One of the most puzzling features is the modern footwear. The blood, I think, is a given element when dealing with any kind of Game of Thrones storylines. But the #lastwomanstanding hashtag is what really has people speculating. Is she referring to herself or to her character Arya Stark? And if the latter, what does that mean for the direction the season takes and how the series ends?

The most obvious conclusion to draw is that Arya is literally one of the few people to survive the coming battle. I am personally amused and intrigued by the #barely hashtag, implying that Arya’s theoretical victory is not easily won – as might also be implied by the bloody shoes. Or maybe she’s just trolling.

Either way, Williams has given us our first clue about the final season of Game of Thrones. All other information has been largely logistical, such as the general 2019 release, that filming on the season has finished, and the fact that season eight will be composed of six episodes instead of the usual ten (or in the case of season seven, seven episodes). The abridged season, of course, is tough news for those of us wanting to savor those last few episodes of the final season.
