Yellowstone introduced a new character in its fifth episode— an ex-con ranch hand named Walker — and if he looked familiar there’s a reason.

On Yellowstone, Walker is played by country singer Ryan Bingham. According to comicbook.com, Bingham is a well-regarded Americana artist who has released six albums, including 2016’s Ryan Bingham Live and 2015’s Fear and Saturday Night.

The song the newly introduced character sang on the show was one of Bingham’s — “All Choked Up Again” from 2010.

Bingham recently decided to try his hand at acting. The roles he’s tackled so far stick close to his country roots. He’s appeared in the westerns Crazy Heart, Hostiles, and Your Right Mind.

On Yellowstone, Bingham’s character was hired as a new ranch hand on Yellowstone ranch after Rip picks him up leaving prison. Kevin Costner’s ranch owner, John Dutton, had instructed Rip to find an ex-con to hire to replace a ranch hand that was fired and then murdered in the show’s fourth episode.

Ex-cons who work on Yellowstone must be branded with a Yellowstone Y. Dutton believes this gives them something to live up to. More importantly, the brand makes these workers a part of a brotherhood that is expected to work at Yellowstone for life. A position that brings a great deal of loyalty from Rip and John.

While Bingham was featured in several scenes in the series’ fifth episode, it is unclear how much viewers will see of him moving forward.

For fans, it’s fun to see the singer take on a role on the highly rated new show. For the rest of us, though, the singing was a little surprising, if pleasant overall. But hopefully, Bingham won’t sing in every episode in which he appears.

Yellowstone airs on Wednesdays at 9 pm on the Paramount Network. You can catch up on the show by reading our latest recap or streaming past episodes.
