Walking Dead fans are currently and understandably focused on Andrew Lincoln’s impending departure, and it’s easy to forget some of the impact left behind from other character deaths.

Yesterday while attending Walker Stalker Con Orlando, comicbook.com reports that former Walking Dead star Chandler Riggs gave some of his thoughts on the death of his character — Carl Grimes.

Despite many rumors beforehand that Riggs had been wanting to leave the show for some time, he had been just as surprised as anyone else when he got the fateful TWD script.

He mentions that shortly after rehearsals for the sixth episode of season 8, then showrunner Scott Gimple explained to him what was going to happen to his character.

"“We got the script for episode six, when [the bite] was supposed to happen. We were doing rehearsals for it and then, after the rehearsals, [executive producer and then-showrunner] Scott Gimple brought me in and then told me. He said, ‘That’s why you kind of act weird after you trip, because [the bite] happens”"

Unsurprisingly, the filming of the episode itself as well as Carl’s eventual death would end up being a fairly difficult experience for Riggs saying “the whole experience was just really — it was dreadful to go through.”

Nevertheless, he also said that he was satisfied with how it all turned out saying “it was good, it was a nice sendoff.”

Riggs’ times on the show as Carl Grimes came to an end in the middle of season 8.

After getting bitten in the aforementioned sixth Walking Dead episode, “The King the Widow and Rick,” he would eventually kill himself in the ninth episode “Honor” to prevent the inevitable turning.

Season 9 of The Walking Dead will premiere on AMC on October 7.
