The Alienist is returning to TNT with a limited series sequel based on Caleb Carr’s novel.
The Alienist will be back! Well, with a new storyline but the same actors in a limited series sequel called The Angel of Darkness, based on Caleb Carr’s sequel to The Alienist. Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning will all return for the sequel (which we are so excited about!).
TNT had a lot of success with The Alienist in 2018 in the demographics of 18-49. Not to mention, the series snagged six Emmy nominations including Outstanding Limited Series. The series was truly captivating, grim, and a murder mystery of the likes we haven’t seen in quite a while.

The Alienist was based in the Gilded Age of New York City amidst a murder mystery. Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, played by Bruhl, was the central character of the series and known as an “alienist” who studies the psychology of human behavior and why individuals behave the way they do. The first season followed a serial killer that was murdering young boys, and Kreizler was joined by John Moore (Evans) and Sara (Dakota Fanning) to solve the mystery.
"“Our audience fell in love with these multi-dimensional, timeless characters and the journey of their struggles living in complicated times. With this new story in TNT’s Suspense Collection, we will further immerse viewers into their world as they are confronted with a new enemy.”"
The Angel of Darkness is based in 1897 where Sara Howard is a private detective and Dr. Kreizler’s associate. The story takes place in a time where the tensions between Spain and The United States and deals with the kidnapping of the infant daughter of a Spanish dignitary.
Whether or not the series will follow the story of the novel is yet to be seen, but we are excited for the return of the series along with the original cast!
