Jason Bourne spinoff Treadstone series coming to USA

USA Network has ordered a straight-to-series spinoff to the Bourne series, and it involves the top-secret assassin-breeding Treadstone.

Fans of the Bourne series (or action spy thrillers) will be excited to learn that USA Network has ordered Treadstone to series.

Treadstone (or Operation Treadstone) plays a very significant part in the Bourne series, an underground black-ops CIA operation that brainwashes and turns U.S. service members into highly skilled assassins and killing machines.

It is the origin from where Jason Bourne (and many of the assassins hunting him), come from.

Season One will follow several different sleeper agents throughout the globe. It hasn’t been entirely revealed if the story will be set as a prequel series or present day, but the plot we received back in April may shed some light on the matter.

Here is what’s been revealed about the plot so far, courteous of THR:

"Treadstone explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The series follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions."

So while Treadstone may not be entirely a prequel series, there’s a good chance there will be flashbacks or at least reference to the origins of the black-ops program. What else can we expect? Lots of action, fight scenes, chase scenes, seemingly normal people learning they have near-superhuman abilities. Likely much of the formula that made the Bourne-franchise so popular in the first place.

The series will be written and produced by Tim Kring (Heroes, Heroes Reborn), and Ramin Bahrani (99 Homes, Fahrenheit 51) will also produce as well as direct the pilot. Universal Cable Productions will be the studio.

Treadstone was originally announced as a pilot order, but that was recently changed in favor for a full series. Regarding the announcement, President of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, Chris McCumber had this to say:

"“As the #1 cable entertainment network for the past 12 years, USA Network is delivering a dynamic lineup of big, bold programming – and what could be bigger and bolder than the Treadstone mythology?”"

The cast hasn’t been revealed yet, just don’t expect Matt Damon to show up… unless the series is extremely successful and he decides to pop in for an awesome cameo.

Treadstone production begins in 2019.
