Shameless, and it’s fans have been through a lot in the eight aired season. With a ninth season to air beginning September 9, the Gallaghers’ have been part of so many families through the shows emotional run.

Mickey. Sheilia. Jimmy Steve. The family house. All have come and gone, and some have come back again. The one constant in everyone’s lives, the one crucial element binding this loose strand of a family together, was Fiona.
Though Showtime has contracts signed through the tenth season, this news that Emmy Rossum is leaving Shameless shakes the audience and cast to the core.
Jimmy, Steve and Mickey were replaceable — as most ex-lovers are. It just takes time and new adventures. However, the speechless nature of the news was apparent even in Rossum’s beginning paragraphs.
"“It’s hard thing to put into words, feelings. But I’m going to try. This business is always an adventure, full of travel and opportunities to tell stories. Usually as an actor, every few months, you travel to a new place, start a new project, build a new character, learn new rhythms, new inside jokes with your crew, make new friends.”"

Indeed, Shameless is like a great friend to the audience. Everyone is facing obstacles in life. Everyone is scared of seizing an opportunity. Not everyone knows how to handle the successes that may come from initiative.
But through it all, fans have learned along with the characters to hold their heads high and be proud of the efforts. Shameless in failure and in victory. The Gallagher’s may have lost a few battles, but they’ve never lost a party. Until now, it seems. Losing Fiona feels like losing the life of the party.
Veronica and Fiona have put some space between them. Fiona has in some ways separated herself from her emotional impulses, creating a new, progressively separating from the slums Fiona. That roller coaster of a character has changed Rossum. Per her Facebook post:
"“The opportunity to play Fiona has been a gift. There are few characters — female or otherwise — as layered and dynamic. She is a mother lion, fierce, flawed and sexually liberated. She is injured, vulnerable, but will never give up. She is living in an economic depression, but refuses to be depressed. She is resourceful. She is loyal. She is brave. I knew it the second I read the pilot script, this was different, this was special.”"
Upon hearing the news, many fans have concluded that Shameless will end prematurely, instead of on the tenth season. However, Rossum’s statement did provide clues that the Gallagher clan will find life without Fiona, as we all must.
"“I know you will continue on without me, for now. There is much more Gallagher story to be told. I will always be rooting for my family. Try not to think of me as gone, just think of me as moving down the block.”"
It happens in life. It happens in the suburbs. It happens on the South Side for a multitude of reasons, sensible and otherwise. It was bound to happen to Showtime and Shameless.
