Shameless’ William H. Macy supports Emmy Rossum
It did not take long for Showtime and the Shameless cast to show their support for Emmy Rossum’s decision to leave the show.
William H. Macy was stout in his support after Rossum announced earlier this week she was leaving Shameless after nine seasons.
William H. Macy has always led the charge in his role as Frank. No one really knows what that charge is towards, usually. However, it cannot be confused that Macy wholeheartedly supports Rossum’s decision to step away from Shameless after the ninth season.
In a recent interview, Macy was more than understanding when the news was announced.
"“She’s young and I think she’s made the right choice. She’s got another show that she’s an executive producer on, so she’s going right into something and she wants to branch out. I wish her well. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next.”"

He said, speaking for all actors of long-running series: “I tell you, when you get to season 9 and you think of [whether] to keep going, it’s daunting.”
In a frank interview, Macy revealed that the cast has “been expecting it” regarding character exits.
Rossum made headlines a couple years ago when she demanded a huge pay raise to make up for years of being paid less than Macy. However, there seems to be no animosity as all parties realized it was beyond due to be paying women similar wages for similar work. Fiona was the heart of the show after all. It could be argued she should have always been the highest earner.
Showtime, as well as executive producer and showrunner John Wells, confirmed what Emmy Rossum’s statement on Facebook announced. Rossum’s run as a feature character would end after this season.
However, Wells put that concern to rest the split was any residual effects of negotiations, telling Entertainment Weekly that the “door will always remain open for Fiona to return home for a visit, or to move back in.”
Wells added:
"“Emmy Rossum will forever be part of the Shameless family. She has been integral to the show’s success, from her wonderful portrayal of Fiona to her leadership role on set, as well as directing multiple episodes of the series. We are hard at work now creating a season nine finale for Shameless which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done.”"
Showtime’s head of programming, Gary Levine also issued a statement:
"“We were saddened when Emmy Rossum let us know that the upcoming ninth season of ‘Shameless’ would be her last,” Levine said. “But we are filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude for Emmy’s inspired work on our series, of course in front of the camera but also behind it. Fiona Gallagher will always be one of Showtime’s iconic characters, and we applaud Emmy for bringing this character to life in such a natural, touching and fearless performance. On behalf of everyone at Showtime and her millions of fans, we thank you Emmy!"
Shameless season 9 premieres September 9 at 9 p.m. EST.
