Austin Amelio ready for Dwight’s return to The Walking Dead
By Derek Johns
While fans of The Walking Dead have been given more and more details about the upcoming ninth season, one character that hasn’t been spoken of much is Dwight, a fact that actor Austin Amelio hopes will change soon.
When we last saw Dwight in the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead, things weren’t looking too good for him. After helping secure the defeat of Negan and the Saviors, Daryl (Norman Reedus) forces him into exile instead of killing him. After his exile, Dwight went out to search for his wife Sherry (Christine Evangelista).
In a Q&A panel at the Salt Lake City Fan X convention, when asked if he would want his character to come back and possibly take over the Saviors like in the comics, he said “I’ve gone through the ringer, so I think that would be a nice cherry on top. Yeah, I really like that. It’d be fun.”

What’s more, he said that if Dwight’s story is followed up on, he would want it his search for Sherry to be very dark. “I would just like to see Dwight sort of go on a super dark journey, where he just has to do all this crazy sh-t in order to find her.”
Given the rather open-ended nature Dwight left off on last season, it’s hard to believe the writers won’t follow up on that at some point.
The show has left characters in similar unresolved situations in the past and they’ve generally come back to the characters at some point even if it takes a season or two to get there (examples being Merle, the Governor and of course Morgan).
Of course, what will actually end up happening to Dwight is up for speculation but him returning would be far from surprising.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead will premiere on AMC October 7th.
Do you think Dwight will return to The Walking Dead sometime during season 9 (or ever)? Do you think he’ll be able to find his wife? Give us your thoughts in the comment section?
