Game of Thrones could have gone on for more seasons, says George R. R. Martin

When it comes to Game of Thrones, even if when you’re the creator of Westeros, you don’t get much a of say when it comes to how many seasons it goes.

We all know that Game of Thrones is ending after eight seasons sometime next year. But could you imagine if it went on for longer? And I’m not talking about the much-anticipated prequels that are in the works.

If he had his druthers, George R. R. Martin would have had Game of Thrones go on for much longer. He told Variety,

“We could’ve gone 11, 12, 13 seasons. David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] have been saying for like five seasons that seven seasons is all they would go. We got them to go to eight but not any more than that. There was a period like five years ago when they were saying seven seasons, and I was saying ten seasons, and they won, they’re the ones actually working on it.”

There you have it, Benioff and Weiss only wanted to do seven seasons, so we were lucky enough to get an extra season. Although, the last two seasons were shortened from the usual ten episode-seasons early on.

Seven seasons made sense when there was supposed to be seven books in the Song of Ice and Fire novels on which the show is based. But as we have reported before, Martin hasn’t finished them, and the show surpassed the books years ago.

Of course, I don’t want Game of Thrones to end. I’m not sure anyone does. But, there’s something to be said for the quality over quantity concept. Would we actually want Game of Thrones to go on for five more seasons and risk “jumping the shark?”

I think what makes Game of Thrones so special is that it is so fantastically produced. It’s like watching a movie every week. And somehow, it gets better every season. And the proof lies with their three consecutive Emmy wins for Seasons 5, 6, and 7.

I’m happy with what we’re getting (whenever we get it), I just can’t wait to see it!
