The Gifted season 2, episode 2 recap: ‘unMoored’

A familiar face returns in this episode of The Gifted.

“unMoored” dives farther into John’s backstory and honestly, it’s a smart decision. In the second season premiere of The Gifted, he felt a bit like the odd man out. Now we get to see how the former Marine became a leader to the Mutant Underground and it wasn’t an easy journey. Luckily, it also reintroduces Evangeline Whedon, otherwise known as the lawyer/dragon.

The opening of this week’s episode shows John fighting in a brutal underground fighting ring. While it seems like things might turn south, John gets the upper hand and wins the fight. Evangeline approaches him though and offers him a new life. He’s hesitant, seeing himself as nothing more than a veteran suffering from trauma, but we know she ultimately succeeds in recruiting him.

This interaction is helpful because it gives John an opportunity to help Marcos. Evangeline once tracked down Lorna and also enticed her to join the Underground. He thinks that she might be able to help Marcos track down the Inner Circle. Especially because he’s slowly going crazy as he tries to figure out what happened to his family.

Of course, things aren’t going to be that easy. Evangeline is the one who was able to get John sober so that he could become the man he is today. He seems worried about disappointing her and uneasy about what she’ll think following the collapse in Atlanta.

Lauren isn’t exactly having the best week though. She’s still plagued by nightmares where Andy forces her to use their Fenris power. Rather than level a city and murder innocent people, she chooses to dive off a building to her death. When Andy goes to grab her, she’s gone and both siblings wake up extremely confused.

Not to mention, Cate is ignoring the family who stuck around in favor of tracking down Andy. Her and Reed get into a massive fight over her obsession with finding Andy. She’s planning to head to Philadelphia with John and Marcos, once again ignoring the daughter who stayed. Reed finally calls her out in an explosive manner, which their daughter has to overhear. The Gifted is really putting the Strucker family through the ringer and it stung to hear Cate say Reed would be acting irrationally if it was Lauren, not Andy, who left.

Andy’s shared dreams with his sister also have him off of his game. It’s preventing him from sleeping, and her sacrifice has rattled him. It comes at a bad time because his training session was kind of ruined. Reeva doesn’t allow “off days” but she knows exactly how to manipulate him into helping her. She’s not quite as good as she believes though since Andy quickly buys a disposable phone to call his sister. Since she left with Clarice to track down a young mutant teenager, Reed answers instead. While he hangs up before saying anything, Andy is still followed by one of the Inner Circle lackeys.

Esme also finds herself at odds with her siblings on The Gifted this week. Reeva is annoyed by the amount of media attention the blackout has gotten. Despite Esme arguing that no one will sell them out, Reeva demands the Frost sisters get rid of the witnesses. Sophie and Phoebe believe their sister is going soft after spending so much time with the Underground. Could the three of them be split up by the end of the season? Esme’s definitely having second thoughts about the amount of murder she’s been asked to commit.

Nevertheless, she powers through and helps get rid of all the witnesses with her sisters. Although, she does allow one man to get killed by getting run over a car rather than walk straight into a plane propeller. The Gifted probably has to draw the line somewhere, right?

Jace Turner is back in “unMoored” and he is struggling to deal with his new situation. He’s lost his job at Sentinel Services but still wants to take down mutants. Could he be joining the Purifiers later this season? He’s back on the hunt again after seeing the blackout on the news. His old buddy in the government tells him to let it go, which he seemingly chooses to do.

Evangeline isn’t exactly welcoming to the Mutant Underground. However, she does let them know about another group in the sewers who could help. Especially because Reeva apparently murders the people who aren’t loyal to her or John will be forced to deal with it. The clock is ticking because Reeva has decided if Andy can’t be trusted then she will kill him. Esme isn’t exactly on board with that plan, and she’s definitely not going to stick with someone who murders teens. Luckily, Andy comes clean about where to find the Underground and his call to Lauren.

However, Reed finally learns how Lauren is coping now that Caitlin has left. She’s upset her parents have tried to pretend as if everything is normal while she guiltily looks up the fifteen people her and Andy murdered. While she wants him back, she’s also terrified of having that kind of power at her disposal again. She storms out right before Reed’s powers manifest once again.

Caitlin and Marcos share a drink of extremely expensive champagne as they continue to mourn their loved ones. He’s terrified of losing the baby with the oncoming war Evangeline promised. Caitlin tells him not to give in to despair, and it’s nice to see their friendship continue throughout this season. Ultimately, he’s the one who made her feel welcome in this world so it makes sense. Sadly, everyone seems like everyone is losing hope in the Underground. At least Marcos does get a signal to Lorna right before the Dawn’s temperature spiked.
