Homecoming: Does this Amazon drama deserve the Golden Globe?

Amazon’s newest drama, Homecoming, is up for two Golden Globe nominations–but is it worthy of a win?

Homecoming is Amazon’s latest drama series based on the Gimlet Media podcast of the same name. Starring Julia Roberts in her first ever television role, the series follows the story of Roberts’ character in the past and present.

Without giving too much away to those who may not have seen it yet, Homecoming takes place in a facility that helps veterans transition back to civilian life. But there is something sinister and strange about the facility, and the mystery unravels as the season goes on.

Homecoming managed to make such a splash with the critics that it was nominated for two Golden Globes–Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress (Julia Roberts).

Honestly, this does not come as a surprise given how riveting and intriguing the series turns out to be. Even less of a shocker is the man who brought the podcast to life–Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. It’s basically the recipe for the perfect series if you’re asking me.

The series itself has such a unique allure to it for multiple reasons. From it’s Hitchcockian presentation to its plot, there is so much to love about Homecoming. For those who have not seen it yet, I highly recommend you do. The minute you start, you won’t be able to stop. Plus, it has Julia Roberts in it, do you need any other reason?

This drama series certainly deserves to win, despite having fierce competition. Other shows nominated in the Best Drama category include BodyguardKilling EvePose, and The Americans. See what I mean when I say the competition is fierce? But what sets Homecoming apart is the manner in which it all comes together. There’s mystery, suspense, and a type of story I can guarantee you have likely not heard before.

What makes the series come together is the incomparable Julia Roberts, who is nominated in the Best Drama Actress category. Not a bad accomplishment for her first television role, is it? What can I say about Roberts that we don’t already know? She’s perfect, insanely talented, and our #WomanCrushEveryday.

The Best Drama Actress category is extremely stacked as well and will be a tough one to decide. Other nominees include Sandra Oh, Caitriona Balfe, Elisabeth Moss, and Keri Russell. Uff, these nominees, though! However, I strongly believe Roberts should walk away with the award because she is simply divine in Homecoming.

She has to execute two different roles almost given how the story plays out, and it’s just a sight for sore eyes. Roberts stood out in this particular role, and just killed it. Not enough praise can be given for the perfection and talent she brought to the role of Heidi.

We are crossing our fingers for Homecoming on Sunday night–they seriously should win.

The 2019 Golden Globes will air on Sunday at 6 PM EST on NBC!
