Move over The Young Pope, The New Pope is taking over — and HBO has released a first look at the upcoming limited series featuring double Oscar nominees Jude Law and John Malkovich.

The New Pope is a follow-up to the 2016 series The Young Pope. Both series were created and directed by Paulo Sorrentino who will once again be co-writing the new series with his frequent collaborator Umberto Contarello.

In the new 8-episode series,  Law will reprise his role as Lenny Belardo, the first American Pope. Malkovich is joining the series but his character has yet to be identified. Like its predecessor, The New Pope will once again take place in the world of the modern papacy.

Several actors who appeared on The Young Pope will be returning for The New Pope, including Silvio Orlando (An Almost Perfect Country, The Human Factor), Javier Cámara (Talk to Her, Narcos), Cécile de France (Hereafter, High Tension), Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool, Peter Pan), and Maurizio Lombardi (The Comedians, All the Money in the World).

New cast members include Mark Ivanir (Barry, Homeland), Henry Goodman (Taking Woodstock, Genius), Ulrich Thomsen (The Celebration, Adam’s Apples), and Massimo Ghini (My Beloved Enemy, There is No Place Like Home).

Law won critical praise and a Golden Globe for his role in The Young Pope. Although some critics found the series ponderous and perplexing, it received mostly good reviews. HBO and its partners will be hoping for more of the same with The New Pope. And the addition of the always-intriguing John Malkovich suggests the production is off to a good start in that direction.
