Star Trek: Discovery cast and creative team tease a jaw-dropping season two finale and Pike’s legacy at the recent PaleyFest panel.

The Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman and cast members appeared at a PaleyFest panel and discussed the series upcoming season two finale and how it will tie up certain paradoxes created during the season. If you haven’t been keeping up with the show, apparently there have been some events that have put Discovery’s entire reality in question. By all accounts, the finale will be both satisfying and unexpected. Kurtzman promises, “You will get an answer.”

The rest of the cast continued to expound about how amazing the finale is going to be to SyFy Wire. Ethan Peck, who plays Spock, claims that when he learned what happens in the finale he “was like in tears, I just had chills… so good.” Wilson Cruz, who plays Hugh Cubler after an unlikely return from the dead, claims, “it’ll change everything.” Doug Jones, who plays Commander Saru, has the most enigmatic and intriguing comment of all, saying:

"“As I read the final script for Season 2, my jaw dropped, and I’m dumbfounded with where we’re headed. So I think the fans can expect to boldly go where no Star Trek series has ever gone before.”"

The panel went on to expound on the inclusion of Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike this season and his imminent departure. It has recently been reported that Mount, and thus Pike, will not return for season three, so the question is how season two honors and cements Pike’s legacy as a Star Trek captain. Notably, the character of Captain Pike has only briefly been seen in action on screen, first in the TOS episodes The Cage (the first pilot episode) and The Menagerie, and then as a secondary character in J.J. Abrams’ rebooted films. Star Trek: Discovery marks the first time Pike’s character and command have been explored in depth and at length.

"“Captain Pike was so unexplored in a lot of ways, you know…and Anson’s really brought it to life, like he’s never been before,” commented Peck. “There’s some things upcoming that I think will prove to be very exciting for fans of Captain Pike.”"

Not only does the inclusion of Pike handily line Discovery up with the Star Trek canon, but fans finally get to see him in action as a captain. Of course, we know what Pike’s ultimate and unfortunate fate will be, and Discovery will also be shedding some light on those future events as well. Kurtzman elaborated a bit more on what Pike’s future might hold.

"“We will synch up with canon, and obviously if you know the story of Captain Pike, you know what his fate was. It won’t be exactly what you think this season, but we will be consistent with that story. There will be a dimension shed on that story that you will not have known or have thought of.”"

It sounds like there are a lot of exciting things in store for the last few episodes of season two, not only to bring current stories to a close but to ultimately establish the future direction of the series and add dimension to established canon. As for whether fans will be satisfied by the conclusion of season two, Kurtzman says, “I damn well think so, yes.”
