Perpetual Grace, LTD season 1, episode 6 recap: When Doves Cry
By Luke Lucas
Perpetual Grace, LTD is back with “When Doves Cry.” We flash back to Ma and Pa’s first date. We also learn more about Scotty. And love. We’ve got the recap!
“When Doves Cry” is more than just the title of a song. Trust us. Last week in “Wandering Left,” we flashed back to learn more about Valerie (Dana DeLorenzo) and her role in the Paul Allen Brown Caper. This week, we go back three years to see how Scotty (Hana Mae Lee) came to be the keeper of the Allen’s books. And we flash back 50 years to see when Ma (Jackie Weaver) met Pa (Sir Ben Kingsley). Plus we hear of the great Luke Steele. Perpetual Grace, LTD just took an episode to show us what love really is. And it was awesome.
Your Table is Ready
Last week, an arrest warrant was issued for Paul Allen Brown. But it was requested by Wesley Walker, Texas Ranger (Terry O’Quinn). So, he was actually expecting to see James (Jimmi Simpson) arrested. Wesley is chaperoning Uncle Dave (Kurtwood Smith) at a bar. When asked what the hell he’s doing, Wesley explains that he’s trying to build something with Dave. We know Wesley thinks the pedophile is disgusting. He washed his hands after shaking Dave’s last week. But, he wants to become something of a friendly figure to Dave in case he should have to choose sides later on down the road.

When Paul Allen is arrested, Wesley goes to pick him up. But, it’s not James that gets off the bus. It’s New Leaf (Chris Conrad). He’s even wearing the ankle monitor. Apparently, the Special Boy decided to take the collar so that James could continue the caper and recoup the money that he owes New Leaf. Also, this keeps James safe. Because, in Wesley’s car, the Chili’s pager goes off. New Leaf’s parents are dead. James’ days are numbered.
Much later in the episode, James has met up with the real Paul Allen (Damon Herriman) back at Perpetual Grace, LTD. He lets Paul Allen know about the switch and the two share a fist bump. The caper will be able to continue. But, Scotty was inside listening the whole time. When the two enter, she tells the two Pauls that she’s been keeping the Allen books for years. She knows things they don’t.
The Five Sizes of P.O. Box
Three years ago, Pa helped Scotty kick junk. We see her in the Perpetual Grace, LTD rehab jumpsuit learning to get the rhythm. She wants to repay Pa, but can’t. Scotty says she’s good with books. Pa, genuinely affectionate over his latest success story, says they have plenty of bills to sort. And so Scotty Sholes begins her work for the Allens.

We next flashback to Scotty talking to Ma at a picnic table. She announces she’s about to marry Lonnie (Ervin Ross). Ma only questions the union on the grounds that Lonnie is gay. But, per Scotty, he’s completed a gay conversion course as of 1:00 p.m. that day. It’s currently 1:12 p.m. Without saying the exact words, Ma bashes conversion therapy, the need for it, and the concept of marrying someone for conformity sake.
Doves start out as red barons. They’re predatory and selfish. But, when they mate, they are transformed by real love. Not some signed-off-on love. We flash back to Ma as a child in an orphanage in Philadelphia. She didn’t have a real mother. She was blessed to have all of her fellow orphans as mothers.
At a bar on the night of moon landing, Ma and Pa meet. He tells her that he’s an orphan. Ma confesses that she’s an orphan and usually uses that as her thing to get over on guys. Pa says that’s exactly what he uses to get over on girls. As a very Leonard Cohen sounding Sir Ben Kingsley covers Prince’s “When Doves Cry,” we see Ma and Pa wake up together the next morning. They’re in love.
As we go more into Scotty’s future, we see her in some alluring lingerie. Lonnie, wearing a strap-on, walks into the far left of the screen for maximum tasteful effect. He wants to to turn all the lights off and close all of the curtains. All of this supposed love is draining Scotty. She is not changed. She’s worried about backsliding into addiction. And, we see her buy what appears to be junk.
Luke Steele, Oxygen, and the Cartel
There’s a brief vignette of Glenn’s (Dash Williams) dad Everly (Michael Chernus) making some macaroni and cheese with a cut-up hotdog. I grew up on that, so I know it’s good eatin’. Then we get to the main part of the story. Ma is slowly suffocating in the grave that Hector (Luis Guzman) left her in a couple of episodes ago. Since an ass ate her breathing apparatus, Ma is growing weaker with limited access to oxygen.

Hector’s wife, Marisol (Eliana Alexander), comes home to find her sons bound and Pa staring at her. He’s left Hector’s gun on a table near the door. Marisol picks it up to fire, but Pa goads her. Her worthless sheriff husband doesn’t load his gun because he’s worthless. Marisol puts up a fight. But, even with only a single thumb, Pa gains the upper hand. Bound, Marisol and the boys are treated to a reading Hector’s detective novel. It’s bad. It also includes real details about Valerie, whose name has been changed to Veronica. Clever, Hector.
When Hector gets home, Pa demands his wife be returned. Hector offers to take Pa to her in exchange for his family’s safety. Once at the grave site, Hector realizes the breathing apparatus is gone. That’s bad because it also served as the marker for the grave. As Sir Ben Kingsley’s version of “When Doves Cry” plays, he yells long and loud for Lillian (Ma’s real name). She responds, but barely makes noise. Her voice has grown weak. And no one can hear it over a crying dove. You see, doves cry when their mates die. They’ll often stay for months just crying for the loss of their one and only’s.
Pa tries to shoot the dove out of the singular tree. He can’t see it. Hector returns home, does not untie his family, and returns with a tree cutting saw. Hector learns to get the rhythm. Pa teaches Hector about love. Sure. Valerie was a thing, but was it really love? After all, he returned home to save his family from Pa. He came with Pa to find Ma in exchange for his family’s safety. What he has with Marisol is ten times as important as what he has with Valerie.
When the tree falls, the dove flies away. But Pa realizes the tree landed on the grave. With Hector’s help they move the tree and free Ma. Reunited, they walk up the highway and plan to carjack the first ride they see. It just so happens to be the cartel and family members of the boy he killed in the jail with his shoe. He doesn’t know it yet. They were finally allowed to be dispatched by the dead boy’s mother, Clara (Veronica Falcón), who has ben keeping her own dove’s vigil in the mattress front.
