Mindy Kaling casts lead in upcoming Netflix comedy series
The search is over! Funny lady Mindy Kaling has found her leading lady in the form of an unknown actress for her upcoming Netflix series.
You may remember that back in April, Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) posted a casting notice on her Instagram account. She was calling on South Asian females, aged 15 to 45 for a new comedy series for Netflix.
Three months later, the comedienne has found her lead.
Unknown actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan will star as Devi in Kaling’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy. The young newcomer, from Toronto, was chosen from over 15,000 applicants from around the world.

The yet-to-be-titled comedic series will be co-produced by Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Both Lang and Kaling will also serve as co-writers and showrunners.
According to Deadline, the show will be loosely based on Kaling’s own childhood, as she navigates life as a “modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl.” As Devi, Ramakrishnan will appear as an overachieving sophomore in high school with anger issues.
Kaling most recently appeared in the Netflix film Late Night, co-starring with Emma Thompson (Love Actually). She has also produced and written a comedic series, Four Weddings and a Funeral, an adaption of the 1994 film of the same name, that will debut later this summer on Hulu.
There is no word yet on when we can expect the new series to debut on Netflix, or even when the series will begin filming. But if it’s anything like Kaling’s other series, I’m sure it will be well worth the wait!
