Netflix’s When They See Us snags 16 Primetime Emmy nominations!
By Ariba Bhuvad
Looks like it’s mission accomplished for Netflix’s When They See Us. They have been seen and heard by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences who gave them 16 Emmy nominations!
When They See Us is quite possibly this year’s best-limited series yet, and no, I am not exaggerating. Depicting the story of the Central Park Five, When They See Us dives deep into the trauma and tragedy that these five men were subjected to as young kids. Thanks to Ava DuVernay’s phenomenal storytelling and vision, the story was brought to our attention once again.
Given how amazing the series was, it’s not a shocker that it was nominated for 16 Emmys! Yes, you read that right, 16! I’ll go into the details of which categories below but I have to praise this series just a bit more.
I imagine it’s difficult to retell a story no matter what it is, but it’s near impossible to tell a story like the Central Park Five and bring it justice. However, DuVernay manages to do just this. If you’ve watched the Oprah interview with the five men then you’ll see that they feel the same. It’s a tragic tale to recount but DuVernay pulled it off, and it shows.

From how this whole ordeal started to their eventual exoneration When They See Us takes a deep dive into the Central Park Five’s story and will make you cringe at the authorities of that time with it. I am ecstatic that it’s receiving the critical acclaim it is because they so deserve it, and come award night, I won’t be surprised if they walk away with most of the awards.
