Fear The Walking Dead season 5, episode 8 recap: Is Anybody Out There?

Fear The Walking Dead addresses a potential nuclear meltdown as the group manages to gather together in the nick of time.

Fear The Walking Dead aired its season 5 midseason finale this week and it was a bit of a disappointment. Honestly, I feel like the season itself hasn’t been that exciting or thrilling and the midseason finale mimicked that sentiment. Last week’s episode left off with us fearing for Alicia’s life as she was covered in radioactive waste.

But thanks to Grace’s handy-dandy mobile shower, she seems to have survived it. Phew! As the episode begins, a flashback takes us back to the moment Logan came into the group’s lives. That Logan will never leave us alone, will he?

This episode of Fear The Walking Dead spends most of its time trying to get these guys up in the air and away from the radioactive chaos. It all ends up okay but unfortunately, getting everyone together is the most difficult task. John and Dwight are still trying to make their way back while Alicia and co. are trying their best to get to the plane as well.

One thing I’m thankful they finally talked about was how the gas is starting to go bad. It’s about time someone addressed that! Gas can’t just last forever and be present in every car, plane, or any other mode of transportation they randomly find.

John and Dwight find a car full of gas and almost make it back to the group but, surprise, surprise, the car stops because of bad gas. Unsure if they’ll make it to the plane in time, John is luckily able to get through to June via walkie talkie and begins to say goodbye to her in case he doesn’t make it back. Come on John, have more hope!

What ultimately saves them and gets them back is a sign that Sherry left behind hinting at a car that she left behind. It enables Dwight to get John back to June and give someone a happy ending in this hot mess of an apocalypse. And guess what? The plane takes off with everyone on board and John takes the opportunity to propose to June and commit to her for the rest of his life.

All this happiness and joy is short-lived because the plane runs low on gas and needs to land STAT and they’re about to fly in blind. Thanks to Daniel showing up with some Christmas lights, he helps Sarah and Wendell set up a runway for the plane to be guided to and for it to land on.

However, before the plane is able to land, Wendell is faced with two walkers who corner him and simultaneously pull the wire out making the runway go black. I didn’t like Wendell before, but his heroism in the mid-season finale has brought him into my good graces. Not only did he survive, but he managed to save everyone else as well.

After a safe landing and tearful reunions, the group gets an interesting call over the walkie talkie of a woman asking for help. As the woman is talking, Logan pulls up in a truck, catching everyone off guard. We learn that he’s been looking for a journal and is asking for the group to come with him to an oil refinery.

There’s not much reason for everyone to trust him given their history, but they may not have any other choice. What will happen? Looks like we’ll have to wait until the midseason premiere to find out (in 3 more weeks!).
