Frank Spotnitz developing Warhammer 40,000 series Eisenhorn
Frank Spotnitz is developing Eisenhorn, a new TV series based on Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 franchise.
It has been announced that Frank Spotnitz is developing a television series called Eisenhorn based on a collection of board games, miniatures, and novels from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, according to a report from Deadline. I have no idea what that means, but if Spotnitz is involved, I’m in.
Spotnitz is associated more recently with his work on Amazon’s lauded The Man in the High Castle series, but he has also written prominently for other cult favorites like The X-files and spinoffs The Lone Gunman and Millennium.
As of the announcement, there is no broadcaster attached to the series. But, based on the enthusiasm of both Spotnitz and the Warhammer 40,000 people, it’s a passion project that won’t take long to land a home.

Eisenhorn will be a science fiction series set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, in which humanity stands on the brink of annihilation. While a war is being waged on the surface, a secret conflict is being fought by agents of the Imperial Inquisition. Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn takes on armies of aliens, demons, and heretics in order to save humankind from ultimate destruction.
The series will be based on the trilogy of novels by British writer Dan Abnett, set in the universe of the popular miniature war game.
I will admit it sounds like the kind of thing that I would either completely love or totally hate.
The series will reportedly draw from a number of genres, including sci-fi, fantasy, and crime, which sounds right up my alley. But the stereotype I have of this kind of war game has me thinking of something between D&D and Tom Clancy, which sounds horrid.
I honestly don’t think it will land anywhere close to the latter and what I’m hoping for is more like a hard boiled Constantine. What I really hope is that it will be nothing at all like I expect.
“There is nothing else like it on television,” Spotnitz claims. “And we are incredibly excited to tap into our own experience creating imaginative, complex and compelling worlds to bring this incredible saga to the screen.”
As for the story’s main hero, Gregor Eisenhorn, he sounds like a fascinating piece of work indeed. Writer Dan Abnett gushes about his creation, saying, “But the appeal to me, from the moment I started writing him, was his complexity. He is not the simple, ruthless hero he appears to be. His battle with the Warp leads him into dark places and forces him to question his duty, his understanding of the Imperium, and his own identity.”
Sounds like a man with whom we could quickly come to identify.
