The Handmaid’s Tale season 3, episode 10 recap: Witness
By Ariba Bhuvad
This week on The Handmaid’s Tale, the Lawrence household is forced to abide by the rules of Gilead.
The Handmaid’s Tale takes us down an interesting path in this week’s episode. First things first, June has turned over a new leaf with her new mission to free the children of Gilead. Last week, she was down in the dumps and rather morbid but after Ofmatthew’s death, June has some other things in mind.
While June was away with Ofmatthew, things changed a bit back in Gilead in order to match the standards of Washington D.C. We all remember the handmaid’s veils and tightly-shut mouths, don’t we? Apparently, that’s the vibe and lifestyle they’re trying to bring here and I have to say, I’m not happy about it.
Things in the Lawrence household get a bit out of control this week between Eleanor’s medication request being denied and the Waterfords and co. showing up to force Commander Lawrence to partake in the ceremony with June.

But, before we get to that part of this episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, let’s talk about how Eleanor helps June find the information on all the children of Gilead she’s looking for. Apparently, all the files are in their basement which helps June learn about everyone’s kids, where they are, their new names, etc.
Meanwhile, with Commander Winslow in town, Fred decides the best way to impress him would be to force Commander Lawrence into doing the ceremony. There have been no kids that have been born from their household which can only mean they aren’t actually participating in the mandatory requirements that Gilead enforces.
While Commander Lawrence and Eleanor are disturbed by this forceful behavior (that he helped to establish, mind you), June says it is just something they will have to do. And so they do it, especially because a doctor is waiting after the fact to make sure it all actually went down. Talk about invasive!
After being put through the wringer alongside his wife, Commander Lawrence agrees to help June and says he will arrange a truck for her as long as she gets his wife out. June decides to poke the bear a bit more by revealing her plan to get the children of Gilead out, which if Joseph helps her with, then he can leave too. Enlisting the help of the Marthas network, June returns home from an outing to learn that they have sent muffins which means yes, they will help.
They’re all on board to help the kids get out of Gilead, and June couldn’t be happier.
