Amazon orders The Expanse season five ahead of season four release
Amazon Prime has renewed The Expanse for a fifth season after rescuing the sci-fi series from cancellation for season four.
The popular and Hugo Award winning science fiction series The Expanse has been renewed for a fifith season at Amazon Prime after the streaming service saved the show from cancellation, according to a report from Deadline.
The Expanse originally aired on SyFy for its first three seasons when Amazon picked it up for season four. It is set to premiere season four on Amazon on Dec. 13, so it says something about Amazon’s investment in the show that it has already renewed the series for a fifth season.
The Expanse began by following a jaded detective and a rogue captain as they team up to find a missing woman and end up discovering a massive conspiracy. Set in the far future where the solar system has been colonized and humanity exists in an uneasy Cold War type alliance, season four sees the crew of the Rocinante set out on a UN mission to explore the planets beyond the Ring Gate.

With thousands of planets made available to humanity, a frantic land rush ensues that increases galactic tensions between Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Season four will follow the events of the book Cibola Burn, which takes place entirely on the newly discovered planet Ilus.
The official Amazon synopsis elaborates:
"Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long dead alien civilization. While Earthers, Martians, and Belters maneuver to colonize Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers don’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them."
The series is based on the novels by James S.A. Corey and was developed for television by Academy Award-winning writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. All seasons have been showrun by Naren Shankar.
The Expanse will star returning cast Thomas Jane, Shohreh Asgdashloo, Steve Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatam, Cas Anvar, Frankie Adams, Shawn Doyle, Chad L. Coleman, Florence Faivre, Cara Gee, and David Strathairn. Season four has added Lyndie Greenwood (Sleepy Hollow), Burn Gorman (Torchwood), Lily Gao (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Rosa Gilmore (Elementary) to the cast.
