Young Justice: Outsiders season 3, episode 21 recap: Unknown Factors
By Monita Mohan
Nightwing and Black Lightning go on a mission to investigate Granny Goodness in episode 21 of Young Justice: Outsiders.
Young Justice now knows that Gretchen Goode isn’t what she claims to be. Nightwing and Black Lightning investigate her home for Apokoliptic tech. Nightwing is feeling particularly brave with a mother box to help him and Oracle over comms, but when the signal is cut off, things turn south in episode 21 of Young Justice: Outsiders.
Bumblebee is Back
Karen Beecher-Duncan and Malcolm Duncan are former superheroes who have now settled for domestic life. They’re all set to start their family, but their daughter is born with a hole in her heart. Karen uses her Bumblebee technology to shrink down and fix the problem herself. As valiant as this is, it’s a real stretch of the imagination to believe that Karen is so energetic after a normal delivery and that her body has sprung back into shape so soon after so that she can fit into her skin-tight Bumblebee costume. For every step forward that Young Justice takes in the move towards diversity, the creative team takes several steps back in how they write women characters.

Karen patches up the hole and then disconnects her communicator to ‘take a moment’. In actuality, as a geneticist, she’s been working on tailoring genetic structures and that’s what she does to her daughter’s DNA. Karen believes she’s done right by her daughter. Hopefully, she has.
The Outsiders
At the Outsiders’ headquarters, Brion refuses to talk to Violet and she’s painfully aware of how short a time she has left to make amends before she dies. Dr. Jace keeps telling her to put off engaging with Brion, saying she’s waiting for her mentor to find a cure for Violet, but I’m seriously beginning to wonder what Jace’s real plan is for the Outsiders.
Brion realizes that Violet’s been trying to reach out to him, and he wants to reciprocate the same. Jace cautions against rushing it, suggesting Brion be more open about his feelings whenever Violet speaks to him again. Jace also tells him that the Outsiders are trending constantly on social media, so Brion should engage with the fans, especially those from Markovia. It could win the love of his country people again and allow him back home.
Having come to terms with his transformation, Victor has now joined the Outsiders, and he and Gar are enjoying themselves when Victor and Violet sense something is wrong with a mother box.
The Incident at Granny’s
The rest of the Justice League and Young Justice are busy, so Oracle contacts Aquaman to search for Nightwing and Black Lightning. Aquaman is aware of Oracle’s existence because he is her colleague on Batman’s rogue team – Batman Incorporated. Kaldur’ahm is hesitant about leaving his underwater home, but then his boyfriend, Wyynde, suggests he provide back up, and Aquaman isn’t so reluctant to leave anymore.
Kaldur’ahm decides against breaking into Granny’s home – instead, he asks her outright what happened to his friends. Oracle loses the signal again, but this time she’s prepared with alternative means to look inside Granny’s house. It’s a problem when Granny takes Kaldur’ahm and Wyynde underground.
Granny takes them into a pit where she just hands Black Lightning and Nightwing back to Kaldur’ahm. When something seems too easy, it’s because it actually is too easy. Wyynde grabbed Nightwing’s mother box when he saved him, but Granny wants to keep it. Since the mother box is a sentient being, Kaldur’ahm refuses to let Granny harm it.
When the good guys try to leave, it turns out that Granny has brainwashed the two Young Justice heroes and now they turn on Kaldur’ahm and Wyynde. Nightwing and Black Lightning are no match for Atlantean strength and magic, but Granny has weapons hidden everywhere. She starts firing on Nightwing’s mother box.
The Outsiders boom tube it to Granny’s and save the team. Violet heals the mother box and purges Granny’s programming from Nightwing and Black Lightning. When Granny tries to attack, Oracle fires a drone at her, giving the team enough time to escape. Though Oracle is sneaky, Black Lightning is very observant and wonders who helped them.
Back at Outsiders HQ, Black Lightning has healed well, but Dick is struggling. Barbara is next to him trying to calm him down. Brion apologises to Violet and the two of them make up. This irks Jace, who sends a message to an unknown contact saying she needs to get her ‘kids’ out. The message goes to Western Mongolia, where Ultra-Humanite has already made arrangements for Jace.
