Pose season 2 finale recap: In My Heels
By Ariba Bhuvad
Pose wraps up its incredible second season on a bittersweet note.
Pose was amazing last night, guys. Like truly, truly amazing. The series, in general, is groundbreaking and has, in just two seasons, captured our hearts with its story. Season 2 has been filled with character and plot development which comes with the occasional time jump to keep things moving along. And that is exactly what happened in the Pose season 2 finale.
When the episode begins, we jump ahead a bit to May 1991. Blanca is running a nail salon out of her apartment, but she’s not looking too great. In fact, the fear we may lose her immediately takes over. Pray Tell shows up her place and it’s clear that the two haven’t seen each other in a while. With the children now off doing their thing, Blanca has been alone and dealing with it. In fact, she’s refused to go to the balls and has even closed down House Evangelista.
As the scene shifts once more, we see Blanca sicker than ever, lying in a hospital bed. Words can’t express the pain I was feeling at that moment. I love Blanca! She’s just about ready to give up and starts listing her final wishes for Pray Tell to handle after she’s gone, but Pray Tell won’t have it. He’s not letting her give up yet, and so he brings in reinforcements to make sure she doesn’t.

Angel, Elektra, and Lulu show up to be by Blanca’s side as they all reminisce about days of the past. No one has been going to the balls, they just don’t feel the same for them. Especially Elektra, who feels flustered that trans women have been booted out by the men. This gives Pray Tell the idea to make sure that during the next ball, the men will walk in and the women will judge.
Pose takes some time out to explore Angel’s storyline which has been fairly positive and successful–until now. After a photographer recognizes her from the balls, he goes out of his way to let everyone know. Not only does Angel stop booking jobs, but essentially she is blacklisted from anyone and everyone in the industry. NOT COOL!
Luckily, she has Papi in her life that will do anything for her. Not only does he start his own talent agency, but he decides to take on clients just like Angel. When he books jobs, he will be up front about everything because fidelity is his motto. He pitches the idea to Miss Ford and even gets her support and a cubicle in her office! Papi, FTW!
Blanca begins improving as the season 2 finale of Pose moves along and is delighted when her discharge from the hospital coincides with Damon’s temporary return. Damon, by the way, has been kicking butt all over Europe, dancing his heart away, and even started a chapter of Evangelista in France! Which is why he’s disheartened to learn Blanca has shut down their house.
He reminds her that she is the reason why Damon is where he is, and that there are so many Damons in the world that need her help. It’s a very emotional scene that I simply couldn’t stop crying during. And the tears kept flowing while Pray Tell was practicing walking the runway in heels and gets flustered because he’s afraid to be feminine. He confides in Ricky, telling him that his father abused him and ridiculed him for it as a kid. It’s a superb scene that Billy Porter carries all the way through in an incredible manner.

As the Mother’s Day Ball arrives, the men strut their stuff down the runway as so many things unfold. Pray Tell is on cloud nine as he embraces his fierceness and dominates the walk like a boss. Elektra wins the Mother of the Year award and Angel and Papi get engaged. But the best part of the Ball is when Blanca comes out in a wheelchair singing Whitney Houston’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
It was literal chills and it felt so uplifting, redemptive and fitting for a character like Blanca. She deserved to feel like she was the most loved person there, and she was–she really was. The Mother’s Day Ball came to a close and with it something to look ahead to the future for.
While waiting for Pray Tell outside, Blanca spots two kids standing around outside and immediately calls them over. And just like she once helped Damon, Angel, Papi, and the others, she lovingly embraced these new children. And just like that Pose season 2 comes to an end, but with a glimmer of hope for the future.
