The Boys season 1, episode 3 recap: Get Some
By Wade Wainio
In episode 3 of Amazon Prime’s The Boys, we learn more about Compound-V, Hughie gets Starlight’s number and Homelander finds Translucent’s corpse.
Previously on The Boys, Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) press the detonator and killed Translucent (Alex Hassell), a villainous superhero and member of The Seven. Now, as Hughie stands Translucent’s blood, it has a definite way of saying “You’re in this now.” After Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Frenchie (Tomer Capon) clean up the scene, Frenchie escorts Hughie to his home. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) is getting praise now for fighting rapists — a reversal of the initial condemnation she received by Vought International’s Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue). However, as a wrangler of The Seven’s superheroes, she annoys Starlight by offering her a sexier looking uniform.
In fact, she gives Starlight an ultimatum: She either wears it or she can’t remain in The Seven! It’s an interesting look at image versus reality. Similarly, when Hughie gets home he destroys memorabilia from The Seven in his room, telling his dad (Simon Pegg) he’s moving out. It’s clear that he’s joining “The Boys” to help avenge the death of his girlfriend, Robin (Jess Salgueiro), by A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

Sensing he needs the help, Billy Butcher visits a former associate of The Boys nicknamed Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso). He tells him about their exploding Translucent with a C-4 suppository. They briefly mention the so-called “Mallory files” again, though not much more is revealed. Milk agrees to come back, but only if Frenchie isn’t there. Billy lies, saying he hasn’t seen Frenchie in years. When they do meet, Mother’s Milk almost fights him, but it’s halted when Milk receives a call from his girlfriend, Monique (Alvina August).
When Hughie returns, they all enact a plan to spy on A-Train’s superhero girlfriend, Popclaw (Brittany Allen). To do so, Hughie installs spyware on her computer. Upon leaving, Hughie actually bumps into A-Train, who doesn’t even recognize him. This is despite meeting with him very recently regarding Robin’s death — he literally ran right through her!
The race to the top
The Boys then looks back to The Seven. After we see Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) in training, Homelander (Antony Starr) and her head out to stop crimes. However, rather than merely stopping bad guys, Homelander casually punches into a criminal’s chest, killing him instantly. To cover his tracks, he shoots directly at the bulletproof Queen Maeve to prove the guy shot first. It’s a nice little glimpse into the mindset of the power mad!
Meanwhile, The Boys see Poclaw with A-Train, who is concerned about losing a super race with Shockwave (Mishka Thébaud). He’s in it to win it, so he wants to get more of the performance-enhancing Compound V. It also appears he’s addicted to the substance, and that it may harm his mind, and it’s possibly why he ran through Robin. Curious about it themselves, The Boys plan to get some Compound V to run tests on it.
At the race, Starlight gets unwanted attention for her new uniform, which she sees as setting a bad example set for a little girl (Makenna Beatty). Also, Homelander gives a semi-veiled threat to Maeve, suggesting he wants her back and is insanely jealous. Separately, Starlight leaves the race arena, and Hughie finds her and buys her a beer. They discuss her weird situation, mentioning that they’d rather have her “look like a hero” than actually be one. He urges her to quit. Much to his surprise, she gives him her phone number when he asks. Meanwhile, shortly before the race, Billy Butcher makes a likely mistake of staring too much at Homelander. Fortunately, the race begins, which A-Train promptly wins, no doubt thanks to his Compound V injection.
Compound V is compounding problems
Back at her place, Popclaw shoots up A-Train’s Compound V, which seems to make her sexually aggressive. When her landlord, Mr. Lutz (Christian Bako), shows up, they start to fool around. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know her own strength and ends up crushing him in the act. On the bright side, she apparently didn’t realize she would kill him.
Still, when Billy Butcher and Frenchie show up, it’s a perfect blackmail opportunity. As the episode ends, another of The Seven, The Deep (Chace Crawford), reveals to Homelander that a porpoise found Translucent’s corpse in the bottom of the harbor. The corpse was stuffed in a suitcase lined with a metal that Homelander can’t see through. The inside of the case reads, “We’re coming for you!”
