At the D23 Expo, the arrival of three new Marvel shows on Disney’s streaming platform were announced, featuring fan-favorite comic book characters.
Get ready to see more of your favorite Marvel comic book characters on screen. At the D23 Expo, Kevin Feige announced three new Marvel shows are in development for Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+. The three live-action shows are Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight, according to a report from Deadline. Seems like Marvel is finally giving fans some much-needed diversity in their character roster.
Let’s take a quick look at who these characters are, and why fans should be excited for these shows.
Ms. Marvel was Marvel’s first Muslim superhero to headline her own comic. Kamala Khan was an average second-generation Pakistani-origin teenager in the US when she walked into a cloud of Terrigen Mists and transformed into an Inhuman. Kamala has the power to metamorphose parts of her body, making her a formidable foe against any villain.
She has a great personality (akin to Peter Parker) and comes with the added bonus of analyzing the life of a young, PoC, Muslim girl in a country that struggles with race relations. Kamala idolizes Captain Marvel, and since Brie Larsen herself would like to team up with Ms. Marvel, I think we can all hold out hope for a cameo from Carol Danvers on the show from Bisha K. Ali.

She-Hulk was the female version of the Hulk, but she’s come into her own over the years. Jennifer Walters got her cousin’s powers after an accident, but she is able to retain her intelligence even when she Hulks out. Jennifer is a hero in and out of her green skin – she’s a lawyer by profession, and a superhero on the side.
Recent comics have seen She-Hulk lose her intelligence, but since the MCU’s Hulk has already transcended that stage, hopefully the show will see She-Hulk retain her mind. Jennifer is also an ally to Captain Marvel, and she has a sometimes abrasive, sometimes confident demeanour.
The key to this show’s success will be the casting. We need Marvel to cast a strong, muscular woman in the role, and not a waifu who gains muscle with CGI.
Moon Knight is one of the quirkier, darker characters in Marvel comics. Like Doctor Strange, he has magical/mystical origins – Marc Spector received his powers from an Egyptian god and has gone on to fight crime under his new moniker. The stranger side of the character comes from the multiple personalities that Moon Knight adopts to get around.
The show could be a valuable opportunity to examine some of the more psychological aspects of being a superhero. For years, Moon Knight has been considered by many as Marvel’s knock-off version of Batman. A live-action show could help the character transcend those biases.
Along with the introduction of these exciting new shows, Disney also revealed that several characters will be returning to the other Marvel shows on Disney+. Kat Dennings’ Darcy Lewis (Thor), Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and MCU newcomer Kathryn Hahn (Transparent) will all be joining WandaVision. Emily VanCamp has been added to the cast of Falcon and the Winter Soldier – she reprises her role as Sharon Carter/ Agent 13 from the Captain America films. Additionally, Wyatt Russell (Black Mirror) will also be joining the latter as John Walker, the supervillain Super Patriot.
Disney is not pulling any punches with their streaming platform. Fans in the US and Canada will be able to access Disney+ from Nov. 12 onwards.
