Ultraman season 1, episode 4 recap: Release the Limiter!

Episode 4 of Netflix series Ultraman pits our hero against a new alien menace. Can he kill the enemy?

Previously on Ultraman, Shinjiro (Josh Hutcherson) was faced with the daunting task of killing an alien known as Alien Adacic (Xander Mobus). To add to the urgency, the alien itself was first seen drinking people with its tongue-like proboscis, leaving their bodies empty husks upon the floor. Still, our young hero doesn’t know what to do, even with the power of Ultraman.

The alien takes advantage of his uncertainty, quickly stomping Shinjiro and pinning him to the floor! To make things even freakier, the alien mockingly says that humans are delicious (and it apparently prefers them raw and free range). Fortunately, Ultraman frees himself, then uses his trusty specium ray to put the alien on the run.

As Shinjiro gives chase, a kinder, gentler alien named Edo (D.C. Douglas) watches over the scene for the SSSP (Scientific Special Search Party). He emphasizes that it’s acceptable for Ultraman to take the fight outside. Why? Edo wants to reveal presence of aliens on earth. However, this makes Moroboshi (Liam O’Brien) wonder why they wish to make it public now after years of secrecy. In any case, the alien battle is endangering the public.

More from Show Snob

People are fleeing their cars as Shinjiro and the alien battle in a traffic jam. To up the stakes, the pop singer Rena Sayama (Tara Jayne Sands) is present. Alien Adacic insults Ultraman before shooting at Rena. In fact, Shinjiro barely saves her with his specium blades.

Regaining confidence

Perhaps the alien’s attack on Rena revitalized him, as Ultraman starts kicking Alien Adacic. However, after a massive fireball happens, Shinjiro communicates that his super suit is lagging. To help him, the SSSP’s Mitsuhiro Ide (Brian Palerma) undoes the suit’s limiter, letting the hero operate at full capacity. Before long the alien menace’s arm is severed.

When the alien shockingly clones itself, Ultraman actually vaporizes them all, falling down to earth exhausted. Unfortunately, little time will be allotted for celebration. The sinister Bemular (Matthew Mercer) later shows up to survey the devastation, saying to himself (and to us) that he’ll shift to the next phase. That certainly doesn’t sound too good for the future!
