Lodge 49 season 2, episode 3 recap: DisOrientation
By Luke Lucas
Lodge 49 is back with DisOrientation. Connie finds what’s true. Ernie discovers a wild new beast. Dud eats pizza and talks to the dead. We’ve got the recap!
The Lodge 49 world spins a little too fast for some of our heroes in “DisOrientation.” We finally found out what happened when Ernie (Brent Jennings) and El Confidente (Cheech Marin) on their trip to Mexico. First, it’s important to note that El Confidente can see the future. It comes to him in dreams and visions. He doesn’t keep a journal of these. No. El Confidente paints the future on canvas in great detail. Ernie is a little creeped out, but kind of fascinated by this.
On the way to Mexico, they listen to more of L. Marvin Metz (Paul Giamatti) narrate more of his own book on tape. El Confidente believes that he is a Lodge member because all of his stories take place in cities where there are lodges. When the pair of knights arrive in Mexico , El Confidente brings Ernie into Lodge 55. He’s the only remaining member.
El Confidente explains that Larry (Kenneth Welsh) had given him the Scrolls years ago. He thought they were worthless, but an antiquator offered him $10,000 for them. When El Confidente returned from the trade, a Lodge member named Edgar Nunez beat him up and took the money. Before they go to a weird land where shadows aren’t right and it’s all hot at night, Ernie notices a future painting of himself and El Confidente at a safe finding the Scrolls. Ernie asks why he’s dressed like he’s in a Mariachi Band, but El Confidente says he only paints the future. Not it’s path.

When the dynamic due enter where they think the scrolls are located, all they find is an empty safe and a dead body that’s being eaten by a donkey unicorn (donkicorn). Is this Edgar Nunez? Has someone stolen the Scrolls from Ernie and El Confidente? Are donkicorns real? Ernie doesn’t care. He feels disillusioned. When he wakes up the next morning, he’s being tattooed. That plus the dream he just had where he was dressed as a Navy sailor, saw his deceased wife, and was greeted by Larry cause Ernie to get up and run. To quote Blaise (Dave Pasquesi): “Wow. That’s a lot.”
Human Chess for Real
Liz (Sonya Cassidy) needs a new job now that Dr. Kimbrough (Bronson Pinchot) is in jail and his credit card has probably been closed. Shamroxx has risen from the ashes like a phoenix. It’s reborn as as a classic, woody screw and chew steakhouse called Higher Steaks. Jeremy (Daniel Stewart Sherman) interviews Liz, but we all know she’ll get her old/new job back. At the orientation, Lodge 49’s resident Tony Robbins, Tarquin (Vik Sahay), returns to DisOrientate the new hires.
No DisOrientation would be complete without a video message from corporate phenom Janet (Olivia Sandoval). She starts to recount a moment of existential crisis. It’s vivid and enthralling. And, as Champ (David Ury) and Gerson (Atkins Estimond) point out, it’s a word for word retelling of Liz’s existential crisis from the corporate booze cruise from last season. Liz tried to play it off, but her clenched jaw said otherwise.
During a match of human chess that reminded me of Harry Potter and Tom Petty in his “Into the Great Wide Open” video, Jeremy has a melt down. He thinks he’s having a heart attack, but it’s only a panic attack. Liz handles herself so well during the meltdown and match that Tarquin promotes her to manager. To his relief, Jeremy is relegated to the bar. Managing is hard, folks. So, instead of wearing a tight white tee and booty shorts, Liz now wears a slinky black dress. Progress?
No. And Liz knows that. When Lenore (Bertila Damas) invites Liz and Dud over for dinner to reconnect, it turns out to be a pitch for a period scam for water called FyDrate. Liz and Dud try to leave, but there’s a small h’orderve food fight. Lenore throws major shade at Liz and Dud. Liz is most affected. She comes back a few nights later because Lenore said her father had come to her talking about Liz. And, Liz wants to know what he had to say. Liz needs all the hugs.
Keep Cool but Care
Jocelyn (Adam Godley) has become one of my favorite characters. Every time we see him, he’s become more comfortable and laid back. This week, Sovereign Protector Scott (Eric Alan Kramer) is throwing a deep ball to Jocelyn in the alley behind the Lodge. Jocelyn dives into a pile of garbage bags, but holds the ball up. The man has good hands. During celebratory beers, Jocelyn expresses that he’s never felt like he fit in before. Scott looks to be torn up about the fact that he’s always fit in because he’s so big and strong. The two want to boost morale at the Lodge. Jocelyn suggests reinstating tabs because he’s awesome and grounded. Scott decides to read off the names of all of the dead Lodge members. Because gloomy rules.
In England, Connie (Linda Emond) and Clara (Pollyanna McIntosh) go for a walk. They really are getting closer. They both experience moments best described as thousand yard stares that transport them to other realities. When Connie has another blindfolded session with the head of Lodge 1, she recognizes the voice, pulls off her blindfold, and sees that it’s Clara! I kind of thought so. Clara welcomes her to the True Lodge.
Meanwhile, Dud’s shark money lawyer Daphne (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) outs herself as someone working to complete the Magnum Opus. Not because it will magically turn bricks into gold. But because within the Scrolls is a recipe for making gold. That sounds like the same thing to me, but hey, this is Lodge 49. Daphne promises to make Dud a very rich man if he agrees to help. Dud wants to enlist the Lodge and admits that Larry has been visiting him. No one believes it until they hear thuds and knocking. They isolate it to a door. Everyone believes Dud is right until El Confidente busts out of the door. Everyone is shocked to find he’s real. Except for Dud and Ernie.
Oh, Beautiful Jeff (Michael Lee Kimel) gets hit with a reality check, as well. At Bob’s (Brian Doyle-Murray) insistence, he’s trolling Ernie for being at the order desk. When he moves on to Speedy and cracks a joke about him being dead on the job, they discover that Speedy is literally dead. Poor Beautiful Jeff. In a full display of self-importance, he says that Speedy’s death isn’t his fault. Duh! He gets flustered and sheepishly fires off some shade to appear normal. Growing up is hard, broski.
