The Chef Show – September 13

For a little fluff and celebrity fun, Jon Favreau has spun off his own film into a series where he pairs his love of cooking and food with his many high-profile friendships and connections. The series puts a forth a simple idea, one that says cooking a meal is about more than just food – it’s bringing together friends and family and celebrating different cultures. Celebrity chef Roy Choi joins Favreau in the kitchen while stars of Marvel’s The Avengers join them for a meal in Atlanta.

You can watch Tom Holland eat his first oyster or the moment when Gwenyth Paltrow realizes she was in the Spider-Man movie. It looks like good, superficial fun with a solid philosophy behind it. And strange as the phenomenon is, there’s nothing quite as satisfying and heartwarming as watching a group of real people enjoy each other’s company, especially when those people are funny, charismatic, and good looking celebrities.

Unbelievable – September 13

This series is based on the true story of a woman who was assaulted and then charged with fabricating a false rape report. She accepted a plea deal after retracting her story under pressure, but then her rapist was caught two years later by two female detectives. The detectives connected the rapist to multiple assaults across the state, not only vindicating several women who had been dismissed by lazy policemen but uniting disparate law enforcement districts.

Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart) plays the young woman and Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie) and Toni Colette  (Little Miss Sunshine) play the Colorado detectives who find her attacker. Unfortunately, it’s an all too common story, which makes this series particularly suspenseful and frightening. At the same time, it’s a rare and inspirational story about perseverance and redemption. The series is written by Susannah Grant with Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman.
