In episode 3 of HBO’s Los Espookys, the gang has to create a sea monster for tourism, Andrés has relationship trouble and they may all have a new partner.

Previously on Los Espookys, the spooksters successfully pulled off an inheritance scare at a “haunted mansion” of their own design. The question is, what will they do next? The episode starts with tabloid-TV host Gregoria Santos (Paloma Moreno Fernandez) having a nightmare. It’s also apparent that she was born on the beach, not knowing much more about her own life.

Embrace the monstrosity

Meanwhile, Los Espookys are doing a project for the strange Pepito (uncredited). He has them dress like weird creatures, then Andrés (Julio Torres) realizes it’s for Pepito’s own perversion rather than an actual scare. Also, as they leave, Pepito makes fun of Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) for his name. When they get to the car, he explains that his mom forgot to include a “y” in it. He says kids made fun of him.

Later he was inspired by a movie called The Woman with No Eye to start scare-pranking people, having “embraced his monstrosity.” So, what is Los Espookys’ next project? Mayor Teresa Lobos (Carmen Gloria Bresky) wants to save her beach town, and a sea monster tourist attraction may do the trick (her previous idea, an owl with a wig, has not been working). So it’s up the creep crew to create an attractive sea monster. Ultimately, it’s only Tati (Ana Fabrega) dressed as an octopus creature.

Trouble in paradise

This episode has a little drama, albeit paired with comedy. Andrés gets a marriage proposal from Juan Carlos (José Pablo Minor), although the offer is later rejected. However, there are some funny moments between the two. We learn that Andrés’ family has been narrowly avoiding lawsuits for naming chocolate things like Charlie Wonka, Mickey Moose, and Harvey potters. It’s also apparent that Juan Carlos wants to unite their families, as Juan Carlos’ own family is involved with cookies. Meanwhile, Beatriz (Giannina Fruttero) gets caught up in a Hierbalite weight loss sales pyramid scheme, assuring skeptics that “rich people don’t lie.” Tati ends up falling prey to it as well. How? She became emotional susceptible after meeting her online boyfriend and discovering he wasn’t a cartoon prince (but a genuine duke). She promptly joins the Hierbalite cult of Mark Stevens (John Early).

New partners (and mysterious powers)?

In Los Angeles, Uncle Tico (Fred Armisen) gives a ride to drunken movie star Bianca Nova (Carol Kane). After preventing her from committing suicide, Tico gives her a new lease on life, assuring her she can get help from his nephew’s horror group. Will Los Espookys provide effects for Bianca’s horror movie idea? In fact, the sea monster gig is an ongoing opportunity, too. They will return once a month to be the sea monster. Not a bad gig, right?

Meanwhile, in an odd twist, it seems that Andrés has some sort have power over/affinity with water. Is it real or is he imagining it? By the episode’s finish, he actually sees a siren-like creature. Will this tie in with Gregoria Santos’ strange connection to the beach? Also, will she end up covering the beach monster, thus assisting Los Espookys in promoting the beach town (and, by proxy, their scare business)? Finally, Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) quits her dental assistant job, possibly to work for Los Espookys full time.
