NYCC 2019: Could Chris’ loyalty be tested on Emergence?

Could Chris turn on Jo in this season of Emergence?

One of the biggest moments of the pilot was Jo asking Chris if he would be able to keep Piper a secret. It’s a jaw-dropping scene, two cops who are both knowingly breaking the law. However, for Emergence to move forward, it’s necessary that the two enter this pact together.

At NYCC this year, we asked actor, Robert Bailey Jr., if his character might have second thoughts about that decision. The mystery is just beginning to ramp up, and it’s not clear yet where the lines will be drawn as the season continues.

When speaking about the dynamic between Chris and Jo, he’s quick to remark how that bond exists before the show even starts. It’s immediate even from the pilot, that he’s willing to cross some lines for her.

"“I think that’s the interesting thing, the trust is so clearly already there. He’s just so willing to dive into things that aren’t really necessarily legal. As a cop, that’s a big thing but I think his bond with Jo is so much more real to him than necesarily anything else. So if she’s doing something and it’s not fully above board, than there’s got to be a good reason for it because she’s just the person you trust the most.”"

Since they’re both police officers, obviously turning against the law is a personal and potentially dangerous decision. They’re wading into a full-on conspiracy, one which apparently goes as far as the national government. If they’re caught before getting the truth, they could lose everything. Not to mention what could happen to Piper.

Bailey Jr. also remarked upon why Chris is so ready to make certain decisions now, but that it could change later on. As we’ve seen in these past three episodes, Chris wants answers and following Jo’s path seems to be the fastest way to get them. However, as he begins to learn more, things could certainly go a different way.

"“You know right now he’s on board to do certain things but he doesn’t necessarily know the full scope of what he’s getting into.  So as more and more gets revealed, I think we’re going to see how he reacts to that, which may not be exactly how people are expecting him to react. “"

Right now, Jo is asking everyone in her life to risk everything for a girl they don’t know. As more answers come out about Piper, their choices might change. Right now, we know she’s some kind of AI and even Jo is beginning to question her.

The ABC series stars Alison Tolman, Alexa Swinton, Owain Yeoman, Robert Bailey Jr., Ashley Aufderheide, Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison, and Clancy Brown.

Emergence airs every Tuesday night at 9 PM EST on ABC and new episodes are also uploaded to Hulu.
