Disenchantment season 1, episode 13 recap: The Very Thing
By Wade Wainio
In episode 13 of Netflix series Disenchantment, Bean gets a mixed reception from her father, Oona finds a new purpose and Leavo saves the day.
Previously on Disenchantment, Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson) and Luci (Eric Andre) lured Elfo (Nat Faxon) out of Heaven and into Hell to bring him back to life. Now they’ve emerged out of a volcano onto Walrus Island where, oddly enough, mermaids give them all massages.
They quietly admit they were oiling Elfo’s corpse as a marinade, but Elfo’s innocence has him thinking “marinade” is “merry day.” That’s not to say Elfo is unphased by Bean’s decision to save her mother, Queen Dagmar (Sharon Horgan) over him, but it’s implied that he’ll eventually spring back from that, especially as they remind him they literally went through Hell to get him back.
Before long, Bean and crew head back to Dreamland. However, King Zøg (John DiMaggio) is not happy to see his daughter, believing she betrayed him by reviving Dagmar. In fact, initially kicks boulders off a cliff to hit them in their boat! With Dreamland still frozen, Zøg is still enraged. Still, Bean wins some trust bye rescuing him from falling to his death.

Meanwhile, Bean’s stepmother (and Zøg’s most recent ex-wife), Queen Oona (Tress MacNeille) saves herself from an underwater anchor, then gets saved by a nearby pirate ship. Oona declares herself “crazy lizard queen of no land.” Oona eventually ends up shooting at Zøg’s castle, leading Zøg to remark: “This ain’t invasion season!”
Unfreezing Dreamland
Next, a big moment for Disenchantment: Elfo is reunited with Leavo the Elf (Maurice LaMarche), who has now become “Dread Pirate, Leavo.” Initially, Leavo and Oona threaten Dreamland, with Leavo noting that his knife, Old stabby, is getting thirsty” while another pirate, Old Thirsty, is getting “stabby.” However, Oona and Zøg rather quickly resolve their differences, especially when Zøg notes that the Bozaks stole all of his treasures anyway (he only has a dungeon full of skulls). A plan does occur, though: Leavo can potentially unfreeze Dreamland.
Initially they plot to trick Leavo, but Elfo refuses to knock Leavo out and drain his blood for the magical solution. Fortunately, Leavo agrees to unfreeze the people, especially after Zøg apologizes and makes his divorce from Oona official. Also, Leavo decides to stay in Dreamland, leaving Oona to become a “pirate queen” who will visit her son Derek (Tress MacNeille) on weekends.
