Will Big Little Lies get a Season 3? Depends on the writers
By Kareem Gantt
The fan fury around the quietness surrounding HBO’s limited series Big Little Lies has not died down, and Nicole Kidman’s comments don’t offer much hope.
Big Little Lies may not be a rating darling for HBO as say, Game of Thrones was; but that hasn’t stopped its fanbase from capping for the limited series.
According to Deadline, fans of the drama has consistently called HBO’s offices to demand an answer for what will happen to the series. They’re right, in a sense to be worried, as HBO has stayed quiet on whether or not the limited series will be greenlit a third season.
Before I delve into the potential reasons for this, here’s some context.

Big Little Lies premiered in 2017 and revolves around the story of five women (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley) who live in Monterey, CA and becomes entangled in a murder investigation. Praised for its star power and riveting storyline, Big Little Lies has received a lot of critical acclaims and has even taken home eight Emmy Awards.
So, why has a show that has proven to be critically popular is now suddenly on the ropes of being canceled?
One answer — ratings.
Critical acclaim doesn’t always equal rating success, and Big Little Lies has had the unfortunate luck of airing at the same time Game of Thrones was having a stranglehold on HBO’s audience. GoT sucked a lot of air from the network’s other shows, and Big Little Lies never really got the chance to flourish as one of HBO’s premier series, as it should be.
Now, it’s in the fight for a Season 3, and if you go from Nicole Kidman’s words, things don’t look promising. In an interview with Deadline, Kidman said that a Season 3 hinges on the series writers, and the stars as waiting to see “If they’re ignited into building a life for these women,” Kidman said.
Honestly, they should be, but then again, it all hinges on whether or not the writers or the studio are willing to give the show the Season 3 they deserve.
