The Lord of the Rings is guaranteed to return for another season!

In a sign of faith for their upcoming series, Amazon has given an early renewal to The Lord of the Rings. Deadline reports the show has only just started pre-production, and this season 2 announcement proves that Amazon has full confidence in their adaptation.

This move isn’t totally surprising, considering the streaming giant spent a fortune on the rights to make the adaptation. If they didn’t plan on making this into a sprawling series, then it would become a very costly flop. According to Deadline, the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, mentioned Sunday night that season 2 was already “in the works”.

Amazon has also announced that the writers room for season 2 is in the process of being reassembled. Apparently, after the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings are filmed, the show will take a 4-5 month hiatus. During that time, the writers will work on the season 2 scripts and the direction they want the show to take. While this means the show might take a little longer to debut, it does seem like it won’t be as long of a wait between season 1 and 2 which is a very smart move.

The series will follow the events before Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, and is rumored to star Will Poulter, Markella Kavenagh, and Joseph Mawle. J.A. Bayona is set to direct the first two episodes and is showrun by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
