One director to unite…the first two episodes of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series. Who, you ask? Mr. J.A. Bayona.

Lord of the Rings is heading to Amazon for its first-ever small-screen adaptation and the nerds in us all simply can’t wait for it. Based on the little we’ve heard already, it’s clear it’s going to be epic AF. It is Lord of the Rings, after all.

And to guide and make this intense movie to small-screen adaptation happen are a lot of people, with the most recent addition of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s J.A. Bayona, who will be directing the first two episodes–according to Deadline. Having to live up to the standards and creative genius of Peter Jackson is going to be hell one of a task so landing this job certainly carries a lot of weight.

The Amazon series will take place in Middle-Earth and will go on to tell and show new adventures that take place before The Fellowship of the Ring. Just as a refresher, The Fellowship of the Ring was the first movie in the original trilogy released in 2001. Yah, I know it’s crazy that it’s been18 years.

This isn’t the first time a story is being told about life in Middle-Earth before the events of the movie as The Hobbit trilogy told the story of Bilbo Baggins about 60 years before the timeline in the first movie. The Amazon series will cover the Second Age of Middle-Earth during Sauron’s (the villain from the first movie) rise and also during which the Ring of Power came to be.

Bayona shared his enthusiasm about joining this incredibly rare and exciting opportunity after news of him joining was announced.

"J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honor and a joy to join this amazing team. I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story."
