Crisis on Infinite Earths: Is [SPOILER] from the Arrowverse really dead?
By Monita Mohan
The crossover to end all crossovers is here and there’s already a major casualty. But is an Arrowverse hero really the first one to die?
We have been waiting with bated breath for the Arrowverse crossover ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ and the first part lived up to many of our expectations. There was pathos, conflict, heroic battles and death. But wait, we knew some heroes were supposed to die but not in the very first episode!
In the lead up to the crossover, Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen has been grappling with the knowledge that he would have to die in Crisis. He had made a bargain with the Monitor during the ‘Elseworlds’ crossover last year, and now the Monitor has come to collect. But Oliver wasn’t the only hero facing his impending end. The Flash/ Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) was also told he was going to die. So far, though, Barry is fine. Oliver, on the other hand, is not.
There was a brief moment of panic during the start of the episode when it seemed like Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane had been killed but they survived. During the climactic battle on Supergirl, Oliver prevented the Monitor from safely portalling him back to Earth-1 so that Oliver could buy more time for the evacuation of Earth-23. When the Monitor was able to bring Oliver home, he bid farewell to his friends and family and succumbed to his injuries.

Much like the Marvel event of the decade Avengers: Endgame killed off Tony Stark – the man who began this entire journey – most of us knew that the Arrowverse would follow through with the promise to kill Oliver, but we imagined that to take place in the final crossover episode, which would fittingly end Oliver’s arc on his solo show Arrow. But it seems the Crisis creators threw a curveball at all the fans. Oliver’s demise was almost anti-climactic; he went down in a blaze of glory, but it mostly took place off-screen. He made a difference yet Earth-23 was destroyed and 3 billion survivors have been displaced to another reality. Is this how the hero that began an era goes out? Could Oliver really be dead?
According to Pariah (Tom Cavanaugh), the events of Crisis have been changed because of his actions, which means that the 2040 future in which Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) had the opportunity to see Oliver again has also changed. Images from the remaining Crisis episodes suggest that we will see Oliver again, but is it our Oliver or one from another reality?
Suffice to say that Crisis has raised the stakes considerably with its death toll. It was a brave decision to kill Oliver Queen in the first episode. Will the writers do an about-turn and resurrect him? That would be a terrible cop-out. For now though, it looks like the heroes of the Arrowverse will have to avenge their fallen comrade instead of fighting alongside him.
