The Master has returned to Doctor Who–so, now what?

Doctor Who is killing it so far this season, and assuredly it can be attributed to the stellar writing and directing–and of course, the actors. There’s something about the season, even two episodes in, that is drawing Whovians in, almost like we once were.

The end of Part 1 revealed that the Master had returned, and the dramatic reveal was worth everything. If you don’t know who the Master is, then just remember that the Master and the Doctor were once good friends. But now, they’re basically frenemies.

But what the Master had to say about their home, Gallifrey, and the Time Lords blew away the Doctor. In fact, I was surprised to hear what had been going on myself. As it turns out, Gallifrey has been burned to a crisp (which the Master is responsible for), and it’s because the Time Lords were deceitful to everyone that trusted them. At least according to the Master, anyway.

The episode focuses mainly on some of the group trying to face off with Daniel Barton, while the Doctor is off traveling through history. This is perhaps my favorite part of the entire episode because we get to meet actual historical figures during the course of her travels.

But firstly, the Doctor was last seen in the alien realm. She manages to get out of there courtesy of Ada Lovelace, one of the first pioneers of computer science.

Next, she comes across Noor Inayat Khan, a Muslim woman in history that was a World War II spy. Both their histories are incredibly amazing, and I recommend you read more into their lives–that’s exactly what I said.

We eventually end up in 1943 Paris, where the Doctor and Master come face-to-face for what we hope is an epic Doctor Who showdown. Luckily, the multi-episode arc ends with the Doctor’s victory, and history being set back to the way it was.

For the record, I love the way Doctor Who is tackling stories this season. Bringing back historical figures lost in their time, and likely unknown to today’s generation is genius. I felt like I got a history lesson intertwined with Doctor Who and I loved it!
