Disenchantment season 1, episode 15 recap: Our Bodies, Our Elves
By Wade Wainio
In episode 115 of Netflix series Disenchantment, Elfo faces off against some ogres to get a magical berry to replenish his father’s life. Also, Dreamland is gross.
Previously on Disenchantment, Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson) was haunted by a music box and her mother, the notorious Queen Dagmar (Sharon Horgan). Also, King Zøg (John DiMaggio) fell in love with an animal woman named Ursula (Jeny Batten). After Ursula returned to the wild, Disenchantment returns significantly to the crazy world of Elfo (Nat Faxon).
It happens to be wash day in Dreamland, which is good for regular folk but bad for elves. A lot of Dreamland’s disgusting wastewater ends up in Elf Alley, leaving certain elves either sick or dead! It is quickly decided that Elf Alley should be put under quarantine until the crisis is resolved.
As one might expect, this problem also stirs up an adventure, as Elfo and others are tasked to find the Legendberry Tree in the Valley of the Ogres. A man called “Handsome” Wade Brody Jr. offers his services in acquiring Legendberries. Meanwhile, Elfo talks to his father, Pops (Billy West), who collapses and is apparently on his deathbed.

To make things more dramatic, Pops says he accidentally got Elfo’s mom killed, then slinks away into a coma. In no time, Bean and Elfo breach quarantine and get hired on Wade’s ship, while Luci (Eric Andre) takes care of Elf Alley’s ailing. Wade is entertaining and knowledgable at first, regaling Bean with ogre encounter stories and giving the impression that ogres fear fire.
Fraudulent tales
Along their journey to face ogres, Elfo learns that Wade’s stealing stories from the Book of Fantastic Tales for Timid Boys Illustrated. Soon, Wade flees the ship as it gets attacked by vines, leaving them to possible death. Bean and Elfo try to swim for it, but vines keep attacking them. As their boat sinks, they end up using part of a Venus flytrap’s mouth as an impromptu raft. Then, when they get to the island, Bean and Elfo feel lied to again: Ogres are actually not afraid of fire, which leads to Princess Bean getting jailed. It’s not the first time Elfo’s been disappointed. He recalls a fellow elf named Braveo who, upon chickening out, became “Bravo,” the elf who applauds (not crucial to the plot, but funny nonetheless).
However, Disenchantment does give Elfo a break when he finds the Legendberry Tree. This is around the time Elfo really takes off, holding his own against even the fiercest ogre. Not only does he dish out a wet willy or two but holds a knife to an ogre’s throat! Basically, Elfo outlandishly defeats a bunch of ogres. Rather than feast on Ekfo and Bean, the Ogre Queen actually lets them go, giving them Wade’s severed head as a parting gift (ouch!).
Later they return to Elf Alley. Elfo’s dad survives, perhaps without even needing berry juice. While this end is a little anticlimactic, this episode’s led fans to question how the Ogre Queen is familiar with Elfo’s name. Some have even suggested that she’s his real mother. At the very least, they do both have green skin. It’s also long been known that Elfo’s backstory isn’t entirely straightforward.
