The Downton Abbey film is getting a sequel!

Downton Abbey’s feature film is getting a sequel, according to Deadline! Yes, that’s right! And if you’re a hardcore fan like myself, I know you simply can’t contain your enthusiasm. There is so much to love about this series as a whole, and when I watched the feature film, my heart was full.

Of course, this is a very early conversation we’re having about the sequel as creator Julian Fellowes hasn’t even begun writing anything for it. Currently, he’s preoccupied with HBO’s The Gilded Age and has no plans to do anything until after he’s done with it.

I’m okay with that because it means Downton Abbey’s sequel will have his 100% attention, as it should. And given the success of the series, as well as the recent movie, I think a sequel is going to be absolutely fabulous.

However, the excitement of it is burdened by the fact that Maggie Smith won’t likely be in it. If you have not watched the film, be aware, spoilers are ahead. You’ve been warned…

The feature film covered a lot of ground about the Crawley family and what the future of Downton Abbey looks like. And with that came Mary Crawley’s (Michelle Dockery) concern of what a world without her dear Granny would look like.

Of course, that’s a concern in the first place because the Dowager Countess  (Maggie Smith) seems to have taken ill and at the end of the film, it’s implied she doesn’t have much time.

That breaks my heart because we can all but assume she won’t be a part of the sequel. Plus, I think Smith is done playing this role and is ready to leave it behind her. She basically already has given how the film ended, so there’s that.

I’m super excited about what the Downton Abbey sequel will look like, and how Mary Crawley’s story will venture forward, as she likely takes over her grandmother’s role.

Of course, we have a very long wait ahead of us, but just knowing something will be in the works soon is good enough to hold me over!
