In episode 7 of Netflix’s Daybreak, Angelica and The Witch audition for the Cheermazons and The Witch remembers her warped relationship with Principal Burr.

Previously on Daybreak, Turbo (Cody Kearsley) sacrificed Gary (Mickey Dolan) save face. Also, Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind) faced an unexpected “big, bad wolf” — none other than Ms. Crumble/The Witch (Krysta Rodriguez)! As episode 7 begins, The Witch is almost back to normal. However, normal for her is still abnormal, so she thinks she’s in a sitcom and in the classroom. Every time she says something awkward or crazy, the audience applauds.

Josh (Colin Ford) and Sam (Sophie Simnett) are in the class, as well as Wesley Fists (Austin Crute), Turbo, Mona Lisa (Jeanté Godlock), golf team Barry (Jon Levert), Eli Cardashyan (Gregory Kasyan) and Jayden Hoyles (Rob H. Roy). When a student whips a frog in her face, she eats his eye, then some brain. Still, she takes time to teach students about our fascinating brains, containing 100 billion neurons and 300 miles of blood vessels. By the time Angela tries convincing her to eat Josh’s face, she’s doubting she’s really in a sitcom. Also, she struggles to remember her own name.

More from Show Snob

In a more real reality, Wes tells Josh that he and Angelica faked Sam’s death. This leads Josh to kick him, Angelica and Eli out somehow. Though Angelica insists she saved his life by lying, Josh just isn’t having it. Angelica heads out to become a Cheermazon.  Ms. Crumble threatens to eat Josh’s face if he doesn’t invite her back, but it doesn’t work.

She instead heads out to Cheermazon territory to find her. Along the way, The Witch imagines being in an all-female, Latina Morrissey cover band. At first, it seems like another strange hallucination, but it’s actually a flashback. She also recalls getting it on with Principal Michael Burr (Matthew Broderick) before the apocalypse, before he became the cannibalistic Baron Triumph.

When she reaches the Cheermazon stronghold, Ms. Crumble does her best to appear like a Cheermazon. She introduces herself as “Reuben Sand-u-Val-wich” (or something to that effect). Demi (Jade Payton), Miryam (Emily Snell) and Veronica (Barbie Robertson) are the “triumvirate” leaders of the Cheermazons. In order to join, Angelica and The Witch have to pass their gauntlet. The first test is a food challenge. Because women are apparently discouraged from eating, all but one food item is poisoned on a dinner table. As most recruits get food poisoning, Angelica and The Witch pass the test by not eating anything and drinking water instead. It’s a weird test but Daybreak is — or, apparently, was — a weird show.

Test 2

In Test 2, the recruits must face some Ghoulie mall Santas. The Witch gets a little freaky here, expanding her jaw like a snake to save Angelica from a Santa attack. If that’s not enough, The Witch then laps up a slain girl’s blood from off the ground! Semi-understandably, Demi tells other Cheermazons to “seize that thing.” The Witch is apprehended and we get more flashback moments. We see that Principal Burr wanted Crumble to change grades, ostensibly for more grant money. However, Crumble sees a necklace on Burr’s neck and immediately suspects it’s a favor from Demi Anderson’s mom, who owns a Zales. He’s been taking bribes to change grades and there is no grant money on the line.

She also seems to recall Burr pushing her down the stairs, giving her a traumatic brain injury. On the bright side: The more The Witch remembers, the more she realizes she’s human. Ultimately, Angelica refuses to vote on killing Ms. Crumble and almost leaves. Surprisingly, her bold decision is how she passes the gauntlet, as they wanted her to think for herself. While the Cheermazons have some strange ways, it’s also true that so does everyone else in the world of Daybreak (and, let’s face it, in the real world as well).

Other stuff that happens

This episode pays a little attention to the Jocks, too. Golf team Barry is struggling to get golf team signups, no doubt because most of its past members are deceased. Mona Lisa tells him that her real name is Mary (the other golf team members were Barry, Terry, Jerry, Larry, and Gary). There’s also concern about Turbo being too paranoid and too quick to punish people, with the latest death being Gary.

Mona Lisa, Barry and Sam (the Jock’s culinary and gardening expert) decide they want to free Baron Triumph to take over, going so far as to offer Barry as a final meal! However, because Burr agrees that things should go back to normal, he declines the offering, which means his cannibalism wasn’t just involuntary instinct (let that sink in).

Daybreak also has a few minor developments for Josh. He wants KJ (Chelsea Zhang) to help him rescue Sam from the high school, but KJ avoids him for kicking a bunch of people out (though Eli keeps breaking back in). He then somehow meets Mavis (Natalie Alyn Lind) on the roof — though it previously seemed like Mavis was only a mannequin. He tells Mavis that he broke up with Sam before the bomb went off, though he doesn’t reveal why. The episode closes with The Witch and
Angelica singing Morrissey’s song, “Sing Your Life.”
